My 4yo ASD son was diagnosed 2.5years ago. he met all criteria. Atec score 100s. At first we focused on speech and ot therapy only. Both were unsuccessful with poor progress due to lack of energy, hypotonia, gastro issues and frequent respiratory illnesses. Fast forward 2 years after lots of fighting for different test orders with pediatricians, neurologists, gastrointerologists, etc. We now also have mitochondria dysfunction, autoimmune encephalopathy, mast cell activation, PANDAS diagnosis… read more
Likeselephants the gastro Dr said my son had fat malabsorption, yeast and bacteria overgrowth and SIBO. Also mast cell activation. Treatment is antifungal, antibiotics and strict elimination diet.
In my experience, the diagnosis is less important than the treatment. At 4 my grandson spoke like he had a stroke (3 word sentences with words out of order) I worked with him day and night teaching him everything I could about the world and himself. Today he is 17 and functioning way about average level in all areas of his life. Yes, I do think medical care is important. Physical health is the foundation for everything else. I found, meticulous attention to all other areas in my grandson’s life made all the difference. Call it a miracle if you like. I did the same with my son. Both of them are very high function people. All I did was pay close attention and point them in the right direction. It was very hard work for all of us and so worth it :)
@A MyAutismTeam Member thank you. I have more questions as I wonder about my own kid’s journey. Did they diagnose that with an endoscopy? Or several tests? We are thinking about going to gastro but that would be a series of tests likely. Is the fat malabsorption something they can treat or something that will always be there?
What did the gastrointerologist diagnose and what did he or she recommend for treatment? These all sound like things a naturopath would test for and diagnose. I did feel visiting naturopath was essential for us, but at $300 a visit, I only went once.
