Has Autism, Or Is Autistic?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I'm curious to know what others say when characterizing their young child's disorder in a context where it's necessary to identify it, such as arranging for special accommodations.

"I have a child with autism."
"I have an autistic child."
"My child is on the autism spectrum."
"I have a child with special needs."
"I have a child that is smarter than me but can't tie his own shoelaces."

Don't mean to stir up controversy. I'm just interested in how others feel about this.

Confused On The Education For My Autistic Son, Integrated Homeschool For Special Needs Or Normal School Education
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I am living in Malaysia
The definition of homeschool here is a center setup with small number of students. (Homeschool here may have different definition to most other countries, where it means strictly doing studies in own home).

My son is 7 years old, high functioning autism. Currently placed in nursery (preschool daycare)
- Childhood Appraxia of speech (now can say one word or regular word)
- Still doesn't know how to talk or communicate with peers
- not a picky eater.
- doesn't have any… read more

For Adult Females With Autism, What Sort Of Experiences Did You Have With Labor?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

For example I knew I was pregnant within a few days of conception, before I could test positive on urine or blood tests. I knew the gender of my children also. I don't respond the same to medications as do neurotypicals apparently. I was refused medicine for my first child because it would slow down the labor, but it was not until I received it that my labor progressed. I am interested in hearing your stories.

Female Autistic Traits??
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Let's talk about typical female traits of autism versus male traits of autism a minute. Holy cow... I had no idea that most of the stereotypical autistic traits depicted in tv, books, and even textbooks and studies are traditionally *male*-based traits!! Females often present totally differently, which is why they are so often not diagnosed until later in life or not at all, or misdiagnosed as something else.

My DD just turned 3 a few months ago, and while she had a language delay, some motor… read more

Is There A Way To Research Particular Ares' Schools For Special Ed Services And Experiences Of Those With High Functionining Autism?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

We are hoping to move north, closer to his work in the next couple years, but I am terrified to change schools/districts for my son. He had a very traumatic experience at his first school---due to kids and staff treating him badly and he regressed terribly. He is in a decent situation now, progressing and I hate to change it. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to research special ed program ratings for districts/schools? My son is high functioning, and they seem to get the worst bullying… read more
