I have a 15 year old son with high funtioning Aspergers. Just wanting to see what others Moms of teenage boys are experiencing?? I homeschool my son also. Lots of new changes with his nutrition are making positive changes.

I'm curious to know what others say when characterizing their young child's disorder in a context where it's necessary to identify it, such as arranging for special accommodations.

"I have a child with autism."
"I have an autistic child."
"My child is on the autism spectrum."
"I have a child with special needs."
"I have a child that is smarter than me but can't tie his own shoelaces."

Don't mean to stir up controversy. I'm just interested in how others feel about this.

The definition of homeschool here is a center setup with small number of students. (Homeschool here may have different definition to most other countries, where it means strictly doing studies in own home).

For example I knew I was pregnant within a few days of conception, before I could test positive on urine or blood tests. I knew the gender of my children also. I don't respond the same to medications as do neurotypicals apparently. I was refused medicine for my first child because it would slow down the labor, but it was not until I received it that my labor progressed. I am interested in hearing your stories.

My son was recently diagnosised with Asperger's, but also has ADHD, bi-polar with psychotic tendencies, Mild MR, Congnitive Learning disablity, conduct disorder, and has many different sensory issues. Let's talk about typical female traits of autism versus male traits of autism a minute. Holy cow... I had no idea that most of the stereotypical autistic traits depicted in tv, books, and even textbooks and studies are traditionally *male*-based traits!! Females often present totally differently, which is why they are so often not diagnosed until later in life or not at all, or misdiagnosed as something else.

We are hoping to move north, closer to his work in the next couple years, but I am terrified to change schools/districts for my son. He had a very traumatic experience at his first school---due to kids and staff treating him badly and he regressed terribly. He is in a decent situation now, progressing and I hate to change it.
