Risperidone
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son has been taking risperidone for aggressive behaviors since March . It has helped him but he has gained a lot of weight . I wanted to change his medication for something else that doesn’t have that side effect . Can anyone give any recommendations?

My son and daughter are both on risperidone. My son needed the weight gain, so he stays on it. My daughter on the other hand is gaining too much and eating all day. I'm in the same boat with you on that. We already tried abilify, no good for her. Curious to hear what the doctor will recommend at our appt in one month. Keep us posted on your outcome! :)

Risperidone is an antipsychotic. My daughter M also requires an antipsychotic, but doesn't want to gain weight. Abilify is one she has taken that doesn't cause much weight gain. I am not a psychiatrist though, they have reasons for choosing the drugs they choose, that I am sure I don't understand. If you talk to his doctor about your concerns, he should be willing to suggest other options. M's doctor always has.

@A MyAutismTeam Member My son started taking Risperdon at 14 due to aggression as well the Dr warned me about the weight gain I was so scared to give it to him but he didn't have any issues with weight. My son is on a very small dose 1mg 1 time per day. He has been on it for 4 years now same dose .
