My 13 year old Aspie son, avid gamer, has lost touch with his long time friends since starting online digital learning rather than attend regular classes. (Had to go this route after struggling during his first year on middle school.) He really needs to socialize with kids his age, he refuses joining activities such as the local boys and girls club, scouts, after school clubs, martial arts, church, etc. We live in a small community with little to no support (that i know of) for kids and… read more

I wish I was near. My 13 year old is just like that. He loves math, science, video games, and YouTube (mostly science videos). They sound like peas in a pod. I think J would prefer to never interact with the humans, but I will push him to join middle school track this spring for some social interaction. He doesn't ever want to do anything if you ask him, but he is one that requires a nudge every now and then. For the winter, I will give him a break from the stress of being in a group. Can your son invite a former classmate over to play video games. J has a couple friends that he sees intermittently when their schedule permits. Otherwise, I keep him socially engaged with field trips and daily social interactions like learning to go to the store by himself, or taking a phone message. People tend to think social activities have to be structured affairs, but really, it is about teaching him to get along in this world full of people.

Does your local library post ads from groups looking for participants? I've seen several and I don't live in a big city.

Thank you so much for reaching out. I just shared this with my son. (Funny you mentioned YouTube b/c he watches so many of those....nothing bad mostly gaming, and funny cat videos....lots of them!) He just agreed to give the boys and girls club a try, it's only two blocks away. He tried it one year but the nouse really amped up his anxiety. We discussed wearing his headphones and he eagerly said "ok"! He's also going to reach out to one of his old buddies and see if they can meetup. This is big. Hope your day is going well. Take care from Washington state.
