My son is getting ABA therapy services from Autism Learning Partners. He exhibits fixations and occasionally tantrums. They have a BIP in place for tantrums but no BIP in place for fixations. Currently they are letting fixations to escalate to tantrums and using the BIP for tantrums. Can someone help answer this how it works for your kid? This is from Autism Learning Partners, Downey branch.
Thank you so much for your reply. In my son's case the fixations are resulting in lot of distress if not catered to. When you tell your kid "first do this then fixation thingy" it works. But for my son it does not work. At one point "first fixation then do this" used to work, it's not working either now. The fixations that result in distress are fixations on something that's not available at home. For example a specific colored lollipop, going to store to get something specific and wanting it right there, fixations on a specific hotwheels model for days such as many days etc. These start with him visually showing distress and if not addressed properly such as soothing him, talking to him, explaining to him these are resulting in tantrums and causing him further distress that lasts for hours. He will cry for a bit then stop, cry for a bit then stop like that for hours. That is emotionally harmful. In fixations like these they need to have a separate BIP to address each fixation with visuals, schedules, timelines etc. Thats not happening currently.
Have a question for you, for fixations they need to collect data to monitor if they have reduced over the time? Is that happening currently in your case? Without a BIP or a goal to track it, such data gets lost.
ABA = Applied Behavior Analysis. BIP = Behavior Intervention Plan
I'm sorry, I'm new to Autism. Can you please tell me what does ABA and BIP means?
