Hello, we've heard great things about the school districts in Irvine. My 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with moderate ASD. She's been in a special day class in San Leandro, CA and has been in every type of service since she was initially diagnosed (private OT, ABA, Speech and music therapy). The school has offered the basics, and not even OT! After sending letters she will finally have an assessment. She is transitioning to Kinder. At this point we are willing to move wherever services are… read more
I cannot help you with good schools in Irvine. But I can tell you. California has a lot of fantastic laws that protect parents, especially when it comes to getting records And most importantly all the… read more

My son has been diagnosed with autism for years. He has always gone to the same daycare and haven't been told about any issues with his behavior. Except last week we received a letter stating if your child does the following we have a 3 occurrence policy. 1-we will talk to you, 2-we will talk to you and ask u to take your child home to work on/fix their behavior and be excused from the center for a period of time, 3-we will ask you to leave the center. Well this week he had his issues (like he… read more

I have a question for parents who have or had a high functioning, fully verbal autistic preschooler. My little boy has been in ABA since March and has made amazing gains, so much so that there are days I feel he doesn't even fit his diagnosis anymore, or that he could lose it at some point. So much joint attention and interaction with us, his family, so much affection, eye contact, you name it. He has no behavior issues, and no sensory issues. He tested at 4 yrs old in receptive and expressive… read more
It wasn't as early as I would have liked it to be. He wasn't diagnosed until he was 5 1/2.

I am trying to set up a 504 plan for my 6 year old, he goes to Speech, OT, Behavior/Social groups outside of school, he also has vision therapy outside of school as well. I am trying to set up for his vision processing, and auditory processing which is effecting his learning. What "goals" can they set up with a 504 plan. We had an IEP this year for social and speech, but he has "met his goals" and he doesn't qualify for an IEP. He is struggling in school academically but we cannot get that added… read more
504's are not for goals but for accommodations. If he already has an IEP it is time to revisit. They need to take out the mastered goals and add new goals to address the visual/auditory processing… read more

Hello. My autistic son turned 7 and I know he’s supposed to start school. The schools in our area do not have enough support/resource for him. He was referred to a private school for autism but he is on the waiting list and 4th in that list. They said realistically it may take 4 years to make it to the top of the list. What do we do in the meantime? If he can’t start school until years later, how will he be at “grade level”? Also, how does grade level and state testing work with children who… read more
