Hi, my son who is a Junior in High School maybe losing his special education supports the end of this year. He has Asperger's and suffers from anxiety. His main support was for his anxiety, but because of his schedule he doesn't have a study skills class where he can work on this. The school has contacted me about dropping his special ed supports, I am afraid that this will hurt his chances of getting supports he may need in college. Especially the first year and the big transition will be… read more
I am glad to have been of assistance to you. If you have any further questions or problems, do not hesitate to post. I will be happy to help you as much as possible.
Social Skills group have not worked for Daniel, b/c he doesn't absorb the info. Should I look into 1:1 behavior therapy to help him with social skill and anger management? I dunno, we're a little "therapy drunk" and not sure it's worth the effort/cost to run around....?
one on one is the best there is no distractions because really a group, our children are already distracted enough
We are looking into possibly moving to the Houston area, and I am having trouble finding any info on services available through the school system there. Does anyone have any insight or first hand experience? The services available in our current school district are great, and we don't want to commit to moving without knowing we can get the same level of help.
Don't move to Houston ISD, my granddaughter attends Alief ISD, West Side of Houston, much better. Houston ISD just announced major cuts due to budget shortfalls.
My son just turned 3 he has been having behavor problems for the past 6 months or so. He hits and kicks, and head butts. He mostly only does it to me. We had a behavioral Theropist come out, she suggested I just walk away. My son can run. He would never just let me walk away. I've tried spanking it seems to upset him but, not enough to stop what he is doing. Anyone have any suggestions I might try. What worked for you?
If you are having an issue with a child hitting, why would you hit? If he is being aggressive and you are being agressive how would he see it is wrong. Its frutrating yes, but spanking is the exact… read more
Hi everyone, I recently took my daughter with Asperger's to a dietician. She is overweight and hates fruits and vegetables. I have tried to follow the dietcians instructions, to try to get her to eat fruit and veggies. She is almost 13 years old and has also been a picky eater and very stubborn. She is not very open to trying new foods. Any suggestions, please help!
Thank you for all the advice, it has been helpful. I will just keep trying. Graciella I am reading more of the labels and looking at the sodium and fat content. My daughter also has a heart… read more
I have a question for parents who have or had a high functioning, fully verbal autistic preschooler. My little boy has been in ABA since March and has made amazing gains, so much so that there are days I feel he doesn't even fit his diagnosis anymore, or that he could lose it at some point. So much joint attention and interaction with us, his family, so much affection, eye contact, you name it. He has no behavior issues, and no sensory issues. He tested at 4 yrs old in receptive and expressive… read more
It wasn't as early as I would have liked it to be. He wasn't diagnosed until he was 5 1/2.
I was diagnosed with Autism shortly after he was. I felt that he was perfectly normal - and had sleep… read more
Help my ex wont give my son his meds on the weekends or vacation time he has him. so my son goes days without it and comes home more upset and violent with his sisters and me. I have try to talk to his father about making sure that he gets it but got told that he can give it to himself which the doctor says no because of where he is on the spectrum. I have tired talking to DFCS where I live and got told they cant do anything because I have the child most of the time. What else can I do because… read more
It is a form of negligence called medical negligence, I believe, for a parent to not give meds. I’m shocked that DCFS won’t do anything! CPS? My ex is the same but my child is only on meds when she is… read more
My son is 4 now. He has been receiving speech therapy for 2 years. He has a lot of words, but only uses them when prompted. He spends so much time reciting episodes of "Little Einsteins" or "Thomas"for example. It is so hard to get him out of "his world" and into ours. How can we get him to "talk" to us?
My son started speech therapy when he was 3 and now is 5 and is now more verbal and some days he says more things without prompting him. We used something that he really liked so he would start asking… read more
It's been 5 months since my 3 years old son was diagnosed with ASD and he will start soon getting ABA 🙂
The ABA provider is recommending us 25h/week (center+home based). He will be starting as well a bridge ABA classroom at the public school in September (+25h weekly too)
I am very nervous that if we go for this total plan he is going to get too much 1:1 therapy, too intensive and too restrictive, and with no time left for spontaneous interactions and family life. He is social and verbal,… read more
@A MyAutismTeam Member can you please update about your kid's progress with intensive home+ center based ABA? We are starting intensive ABA in same way after doing only 10 hours of aba at home… read more
We took the boys (4 and 2) to Disney World and it went surprisingly ok. It would've been intolerable without the Guest Assistance Card, which I found to be pretty generous. And we discovered that John LOVES roller coasters. I'd love to try SDC or Six Flags -- curious how their accommodations for autism stack up to Disney World. Any experiences?
So sorry, I misread the question. Ok we went to SDC two days ago.they were so awesome! I was worried at first when I got to guest services because they were a little confused. They gave me a handicap… read more
