Well I'm feeling a bit stuck

My son has just turned 6 years old
He has been diagnosed with a general moderate learning disability.

When he started school me and the teachers felt that there was something a bit different with him
So we decided to go for an autism assessment. He was first assessed by the educational psychologist. Who diagnosed him with a learning disability. Overall the whole autism assessment process took about just over a year.
I received the report from the paediatrician who… read more

I have 2 sons with ASD. Please do not accept your pediatrician’s or the school’s label. You are correct. There are advocates to help you in finding doctors and with the school. TO HELP YOU: school districts are governed by FERPA. School districts must respond to parental requests for evaluation such as neuropsychological testing; or other needs of your child. If they have corporal punishment, you have the right to refuse it be used on your child. ***Before your son starts back to school, request an ARD meeting before the start of school and Ask for an outside neuropsychological exam again in writing. The school must honor this request and you chose the doctor. Please do not let the school district choose for you. Make sure to get copies of the ARD meeting minutes & any other documents in writing before you leave. The school is responsible for the cost of the MD and testing. *** EVERYTHING YOU WROTE ABOUT YOUR CHILD IS PART OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS. I believe that a MD specialized in ASD could help. My sons graduated from a private high school for students with ASD as valedictorian and salutatorian.

Sounds like autism to me. Go with your gut and what you feel is best for kiddo. Dont wait for anyone to get on your bandwagon. Youre the driver...go

Search online for Autism clinics or specialist near you. He needs the full Autism eval to get correct diagnosis and, more importantly, correct ARD in school. Unfortunately, most public schools don't care and will only do the minimum required by law. Currently takeing my granddaughters district to court with the help of Disability Rights Attorney.

Thank you for your response DJskids. I am going to my health practioner for a referral for a second opinion. My son was discharged from the paediatrician as she obviously felt there was no need for anything further. I will definitely be going back.

I also forgot to mention that I find it difficult as me and my childrens father are separated and have been for over 2 years. He feels that there isn't anything going on with our son at all. I understand that It is important to get the views of parents in this process however this was done via email with my children's father and the paediatrician and I was told nothing of this communication until I saw the report. My children's father said that he had just told the paediatrician that he felt that the issues my son had were just with me and that he himself does not have any struggles regarding our son.

I understand that children do act and behave differently in different scenarios. Whether other parents or people's houses and at school. But if the school have noticed something is different and they have given me their full support to seek a second assessment, things can't be that different for my ex can they?

Whenever my son gets home from school or from his father's house after having a couple of nights there he comes back extremely tired and often has plenty of meltdowns and wants to get the hoover out.
