Intermittent Leave-FLMA
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My boss suggested I apply for intermittent leave, so that I don’t get penalized for the times I come in late or have to call out due to caring for my autistic child. The thing is I have to be specific regarding when and how long I’ll need. But my situation isn’t a preplanned thing like therapy appointments, it’s simply when my husband and I have conflicts in our schedule when sharing our care giving responsibilities. Has anyone had experience with this?

@A MyAutismTeam Member I got my jobs fmla forms. The doctor can put peridoic not all at once time and yes i just put myself out of office when needed for example doct appt in 2 weeks I enter my time but use fmla as reason. You dont know when u will use it but your employer should understand when they put down periodically usage.

My job suggested this and it was best thing. I had my doctor put peridoic time away such as for doctors apt, iep meetings, etc for anything realted to his autism. So far so goos i just turned in my papers again for 3year.

See if your employer offers any type of caregiver accommodations (e.g. allowing you to work through lunch or work later to make up for lost time or the ability to apply annual leave when late). Check with your HR dept. to see about the downside of using FMLA - it could be that once all FMLA is exhausted for the year it might affect your health coverage or it might diminish legal protections you have).

@A MyAutismTeam Member ok I think I understand. So I put period use and the job should understand, because I thought intermittent use was the same thing.

@A MyAutismTeam Member but how did you or do you request time from your doctors? What I mean is currently my child doesn’t have regularly scheduled appointments. So How would I request time when it could be something as simple as I’m late because his caregiver was late or an IEP meeting suddenly came up. My doctor wants me to fill out the specific time request before he fills out the medical part.
