A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

What is the best way to potty train a child with autism? My son will be four soon. Thanks all in advance for your time.

Just let them do it on their terms. We have done that with our five year old daughter; however, we still have accidents. We go to the extent to have her wear a diaper when we go out or to bed. If your son is still in diapers, check with your son's insurance as they may even be able to send diapers to you each month for free. We were told that by her doctor and have been getting them every since and have diapers for years as we have a two and a half year old boy as well.

All of my kids were different. They took to as old as age 5 and as young as 18 months. Excessive praise seemed counterproductive, though. Learning his cues, and getting him on the potty at the right time, and then giving matter of fact verbal, positive reinforcement seemed to work out the best for us. Extrinsic rewards only drew out the process longer. The reward needs to be that they figure out dry pants feel better. Starting by making sure he is always changed as soon as he is wet helps him get used the the good feeling of being dry.

Been working on potty training my 3 1/2 son for about 4months now we make a really big deal about it like to the point he probably thinks we are crazy. We have used candy stickers small cheap toys as prizes when he goes successfully. We also set a timer 15 20 mins as a reminder it's time to try potty. It has not been easy but it's working slowly. Good luck momma he will get it

There really isn’t a one size fits all answer for this. It can be complicated if the child has a fear of the toilet itself or some other issue. It can depend on the child’s ability to comprehend & feel when he needs to go. It can be much harder for a nonverbal child in some cases. I recommend looking up interoception, it explains our ASD kids functioning.

I’m sure you will get better answers from other parents here who have successfully potty trained their child.

Hello! All I have to say is be patient, every kid is different. Mine started going during quarantine and he goes on his own but we still put him on pull-ups for school so he is 6 years old. It not a easy road but it will happen 🤩🤩
