Help Please. Godson Suddenly Not Potty Trained
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m new to this group and hoping this forum has some useful answers to common (?) problems. He used to go to the bathroom on his own until a few months ago. Now, he’s been wearing diapers because he’s not letting them know when he needs to go #2, and he’s taking all his clothes off and going on the floor. At his age now, he’s pretty much doing whatever he wants. Has anyone else dealt with this before and have any suggestions? Thank you!!

Hi there! Hope you all are safe. I have a son who will be 14 this month and he is non verbal, can be aggressive, but most of the time a teddy bear. I love him to death. So with my son, I would surround the toilet area and bathroom with things he liked such a toys, chewys and of course his ipad. After he ate or drank something, I would sit him down on the toilet till he went. When he went , I would praise him and say good job papa. Trust me its trial and error. My son goes #1 and #2 but wiping has been challenging so all I can say is keep trying and if you need to talk or ask a question, I'm here. Be consistant! We are super heroes to these beautiful children! Stay safe!

Usually, when this happens it is constipation. Sitting down on the toilet is a hard way to poop. Taking off their clothes and squatting is a more natural position. Also, if the constipation has been chronic, his sphincter may be stretched, making it harder to hold feces in.

Shawn, thanks very much for the advice! My Godson can be aggressive at times too, but he’s a very lovable child most of the time. Sounds like the things you are doing are similar to what his parents are as well, but I guess you’re right, trial and error and consistency... thank you for offering your support!
