My Son Misses Therapy Due To Sleep And We Get In Trouble Because Of It. Is This Even Something They Can Do?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son has problems with sleep, we give him melatonin as directed from his doctor, sometimes it works others it dont. Some nights he falls right to sleep but Is back awake in an hour or 2 an stays awake until sometimes 7,8,9 a.m. then falls back to sleep. Due to this we have to not send him to therapy. They are aware of this but recently told us that he can not miss due to not getting sleep. Yesterday he had to miss due to sleep an we received a message saying they want to meet with us because… read more

I know this doesn't solve the issue but it is not your fault! People who don't have our unique challenges just don't get it. My ABA therapist was trying to help me get on a schedule so that sessions weren't missed so she had me keep a sleep log. Once she saw how the 4-5 hour cycle was happening 24 hours I think she understood a bit more how out of control we are, no matter all the usual tricks and routines. Hang in there!

I am not suggesting this, but felt I needed to share to give you a laugh sometimes through our tears we need it. My son was so manic, I was falling asleep hoping he would realize 3 a.m. its bed time, but he was a energizer bunny that would never turn off. One hospital was a blessing in Maryland that took my tears and concerns and said we will evaluate him and observe. (He was not given a diagnosis nor was he on meds) Imagine, neither, but I am a clinician, so I had double super powers as a mom and clinician (knowing my son and behaviors). I could not diagnosis him on paper legally, but the information I provided was valuable and consistent with what was experienced by the medical staff and psychiatrist. I used my skills and provided characteristics, behaviors and on going duration of what was happening at home, he was already (illegally) put out of day care due, eloping every where (Houdini was my son's alter ego at 3 yrs old) (lol). The Children's ER staff were not prepared for what I endured for over a six months as it become more concerning and the lack of "believing" my concerns, gave the ER staff as they say, "gave them their money and time worth). Initially, they I was assisting, helping him stay in the room they tried to close and lock, he would open and run. They tried to give him toys, he would through them, run and climb on the bed, play in the sink. I finally stopped doing what I did at home: Everything. I said let the hospital staff realize its not some fictitious (Munchausen) yes they even tried to give me this diagnosis. (*Truth in my reality) The tech kept coming in, trying to settle my son down. The call bell, emergency bell, the CODE bell, they created a covering with a cup so my son would stop hitting every bell he could find that would push. *(remember he was not on meds yet for manic behavior or given a diagnosis). Just wait.....and read. Finally, staff got tired of running in and out trying to settle him down. Change of shift, tell them what is going on. Wooosah.....Finally they gave him a 1;1 to help with his manic and no sleep. She was awesome. Played with him, helped to give him his 1:1 attention by taking him to the play room, yes at 1: 00 a.m. Finally his body started to become more settled and eventually my baby wanted to go to sleep. The next day at report (* experienced working in the hospital in psychiatry for fourteen years, I could imagine what morning report was like). We had a diagnosis and meds.

If his problem is falling asleep, but waking up a couple hours later, then melatonin isn't going to help. You might talk to the doctor about a different medication if you are comfortable with that at his age.
As far as the therapy goes, I don’t think I would put up with that for long. I remember back when M was in Kindergarten, I would just carry her into her classroom asleep and plop her down on the carpet. Parents always get blamed for their child's sleep problems. It's easy to assume you just aren't putting him to bed at night. Sleep issues were one reason I started homeschooling.

Thank you! It's actually the supervisor that is being like this. He has been going here for almost 5 years now and it has never been an issue. Until recently the owner has 2 new ladies that pretty much run the business for her. And they are terrible I had one of my sons therapist tell me that when she would go back inside from talking with me at the end of his session. They asked her what me an her were talking about because she was talking with me for more than 5 mins. I've had 2 of his realy good therapist quit because they said new management (the ladies I'm having issues with) treated them horrible. 😔
The therapist are amazing it's just the management they have, is the issue.

Sorry to hear this. It is rough! I warn all the new therapists we get that nap times change everyday because sleep is different every night. I feel bad when they miss sessions but with kids like ours they need to be flexible.
Mine is the same in that if they go to bed at 9 or 10pm, they are awake in the middle of the night.

It is so hard but sounds like you are advocating the best you can. Maybe if there is a supervisor on the therapy team they could help figure something out? Best of luck.
