"Novice autistic drivers are 44% less likely to crash due to unsafe speed than non-autistic young drivers.

Autistic young drivers are more than three times more likely to crash while making a left-turn or U-turn than non-autistic novice drivers."

In this survey, adults with autism spectrum disorders reported earning their drivers' licenses at a later age, driving less frequently and putting more restrictions on their own driving behaviors (such as avoiding driving on highways or at night), on average compared to non-autistic adults. The respondents with autism spectrum disorders also reported more traffic violations.

According to RESEARCH conducted at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), 2 in 3 autistic adolescents without intellectual disability are interested in driving, but only 1 in 3 autistic individuals without intellectual disability get licensed by age 21.

Autism can affect decision-making, information processing, and attention to varying degrees, as well as social cognition, communication, motor coordination, and the ability to control emotions.

Many of these capabilities come into play with YOUNG AUTISTIC DRIVERS. Some, such as getting lost in the details of the road or having difficulty recognizing cues of other drivers, may raise the risk for unsafe driving behaviors. Others, such as a vigilance to follow the RULES OF THE ROAD, may promote safer driving behaviors.

One study suggests autistic males may have slower hazard detection times and difficulties RECOGNIZING HAZARDS, including pedestrians, than non-autistic males. ANOTHER STUDY CONDUCTED AT CHOP found newly licensed young autistic drivers have a similar crash risk but are much less likely to have their license suspended or to receive a traffic violation than their non-autistic peers.

I drive, and have found it that places that have a lot of drivers like major cities, say Boston, New York City, L.A. and Miami, are challenging for me. When I was younger I could handle the stress and people better. But now, I get panic attacks from time to time due to the stress and some of the aggressive drivers out there. Driving in tight places like narrow bridges or tunnels stress me out. And I hate driving in rain or snow, lets not even talk about night time, the glare of the lights is too much sensory. My 10 year tells me every time we get in the car that he knows it that he will never drive. He says its too stressful and hard to keep up with driving and watching other cars, it gives him anxiety if we drive by a semi truck. My 12 year old gets nervous about it, but says he is going to learn to drive because he doesn't want to depend on others to get him around. All three of us are on the spectrum and very different. Each child and adult is different, and have different tolerance, sensory levels.
