Son Wants To Go On A Car Ride Daily
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Our son is 20 and for several years he has wanted to go on a long or short car ride daily. He is not happy until he gets his daily ride and then he’s fine for the night or afternoon. Has anyone else experienced this strong desire for a ride in the car? Looking for alternatives that might provide the same sensory stimulation. Gas is pretty expensive and traffic not good in our area.

Would love to hear the experiences of others.

I thought it was just me! My brother is 45 & is nonverbal autistic with high needs. He wants me to drive around all day long. I drive 30-60mins 3x a day but as soon as we get home, he wants to go out again. He has a meltdown & grabs my arms when I refuse. He’s very tall & strong & doesn’t know his strength. It’s very frustrating & I can’t afford to waste so much gas. He can’t walk long because his foot didn’t heal properly after breaking it years ago. I don’t know what to do either.

My Son loves his car rides too, and he's the same age as your guy! :) We have grown to love the car rides with him. it's a relaxing time of day, and it makes him so happy. I figure, he will never get to drive his own car, or do so many other things, it's the least we can do for him. He also loves going for a daily walk with me pushing him in his transport wheelchair. I made him a Bingo game where each square is an object to find, and am helping him look for them. I take a picture of each item we find, and then check it off the list. One item a day. He's grown to really like it, and I will be making another one for him when this one is filled up. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FRE...

Are long walks an option?

It could just be that is the routine he is used to. Maybe he could get used to a bike ride instead. My son J takes long bike rides every day.
