For those of you with ASD kiddos... how do you handle interactions on the playground with strangers / random kids who your child wants to play with or who wants to play with them?

My daughter is almost 5 and very much wants to play with other kids on the playground. When there are other kids there, she does attempt with to say hello and ask them to play (though she will sometimes say it too quietly, or when they're too far away, or not look at them so they don't know she is talking to them). Hi I have autism. Here’s my advice since your daughter wants to play with the kids let her try and if she struggles go and her. If I were you I’d tell them that her name she is shy in a little bit socially awkward. Because depending on the age they may not know about autism and you don’t want to focus to turn towards her disability rather playing with her but that’s all I have to say

I don’t disclose. I would facilitate interaction by telling my child out loud what to say like “say hi” and if my child asked a question the child didn’t hear I would repeat it and explain to child or parent that my kid is very shy but wants to play. I don’t disclose at the school either and my child has 1:1 aide. I had a kid ask me the other day why he has an aide and I said “to help him pay attention in class” then she asked “why does he not pay attention?” And I said “I don’t know. Why do you not pay attention in class sometimes.” It stumped her and she did not ask more questions. It is nobody’s business except the teacher, the aides, and staff but I won’t tell the parents or kids more than he has special needs.
