Are Others Having The Same Experience Remaining In A Public School System Post-12th Grade?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Our child's transition-related goals were not even a little bit met by the end of 12th grade. We rejected her diploma. She is still in public school and enrolled in a life skills program. I wonder if anyone has had a positive experience in a public "18-21" program. My experience has been that my child colors and uses her phone for a large part of every day.

I believe, with the right accommodations, all kids can learn life skills. It's not always about living out of the house, although that'd be great for our daughter. It can be about remaining home with as many independent life skills as possible (dressing, feeding, cleaning, washing clothes, that kind of thing). I know my child can do much more than she is being "taught." It oftentimes feels like the goal is to appeal to the young adults grouped with her, but they're much different than my daughter.

Sounds like my 12-year-old daughter now. My wife wants my daughter to be enrolled in ABA and school as long as possible but not sure how much she learns. She does learn things but she'll never even get a high school diploma. I think my daughter may be better suited to being a stay-at-home housewife.
