Further Diagnosis
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter (7 years old) already has an ASD diagnosis through our Regional Center. She received it years ago after already having received nearly two years of related services. She is what many would term "high-functioning" as she's mainstreamed at school with only pull out services for speech. This next school year she will also be pulled out for social behavior type classes.

I know anxiety can go hand-in-hand with ASD. More and more of her behaviors appear to me to be in response to… read more

If she’s now of school age (maybe depending on each state but) they typically have a kind of revaluation at that age and you’d be able to discuss the changes/behaviors that you’re seeing. Sometimes an… read more

Military Career With ASD?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son, age 15, is obsessed with the military and has been for quite some time. He is very high functioning but still has some issues, particularly because he is also ADHD. When he takes his medication, he does very well, but there is still that inability to read subtle social cues, fixation on a topic, etc. Does anyone know if it is possible to enter the military with an ASD diagnosis?

Yes, that helps a lot! I will talk to my son about it and then reach out to our local recruiter, especially knowing that he won't get the recruitment hard-sell. Thanks!

What Makes A Good ABA Therapist?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We had a therapist for 15 months (!) who is now going back to grad school. As we start with someone new, and as I talk to a family who was really unsatisfied with their therapist, I’d like to ask my MAT family- what, in your experience, do you feel has made a good therapist that ushered through progress with your child? I think my son likes our new therapist but I am hearing from others observing her that she is green. What qualities have you noticed in a good therapist, and is it ok for them to… read more

Question About Courteousy With Therapy Team?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We have in home treatments for the majority of our therapies. On the whole it is ideal to have at home but we do work in clinic and take therapies out in the community, classes, etc.

All that said, our BCBA will turn up to our home unannounced a few times a month. She doesn’t let us know when she’s coming and from the looks on the BTs faces when there is a knock on the door, they are surprised she is there. We have had other BCBAs in the past—one who turned up once a month, always planned… read more

People In Public Try To Correct Your Nonverbal Child?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

You ever have someone try to correct your nonverbal child "bc he looks normal?"
for doing something they " should know better"
such as opening and closing a small door at CVS at pharmacy bc they have seen the techs come in and out and are now fixate on the door opening and closing and let's keep in mind the child has one year old mind set.
I don't know where these people get off at?

Where Are Good Places For Therapy In Nashville, TN
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm am looking to relocate to the Nashville "area." I'm probably going to end up in Dickson Co, but don't mind to drive into Nashville or Franklin for services. I'm looking for suggestions for medical care across the board. I'll need to set my son up with a new pediatrician, OT, SLP, and hopefully ABA. Any suggestions on where to get these services would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I would love to get a Rottweiller for my 3 year old autistic son. I would consider a rescue but would be afraid of not raising the two togeahter. I just worry about not having a big yard for the doggie. Ive owned 3 at once but had 2 acres fenced for them to run. Is there a differant breed that may be a better choice?
