My son was not diagnosed with ASD until he was 11, he is now almost 13. Prior to that he was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. After a reevaluation this summer it was determined he has Asperger's and ADHD. He has always had difficulty with aggression, but some of the more obvious ASD behaviors have increased since starting puberty. (More perseveration, vocal stimming, tantrums, threats, entering others personal space). The school has refused to acknowledge that his behaviors are due to Autism… read more

I need advice on how to avoid the power struggle with my 16 yr. old. I have tried all I can think of and need to know what has worked for others with teens. My stress level is out of control and my bp is too high, please help!
It's always harder for the parents, as your a safe target for aggression. I've learned working with adults that each and every one of our kiddos are master manipulators in their own way, and they've… read more
My son wants to throw things away. I have no idea why he wants to do this. But he wants to throw things away so badly that he actually will rip up items so he "justify" throwing them away. He throws away books, clothes, food, etc. It happens every day, throughout the day, and multiple times per day.
He's 18 so I can't physically stop him. I am able to delay him. He also gets sneaky about it to the extent of getting up during the night to throw things away.
Ideas anyone?
Did you ever find a solution to this? Currently dealing with the exact same behavior.
My 6 year old daughter was assessed by a psychiatrist as having characteristics at the age of 3.5. She was labeled as being developmentally delayed and labeled as pdd-nos. We took her to a developmental pediatrician who said that she was not on the spectrum, but sent her for an ados test. The ados test was administered and they said that she was PDD-NOS. The test was not administered in the best environment in that she sat in a car seat in traffic for 2 hours. The developmental pediatrician… read more

How do u know if your child needs ABA?
It’s usually the recommendation of the Dr who diagnosed. If it’s something you’re considering then you’d have an evaluation done just like with other services like speech and OT
My son starting his SIB's after his father was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. They were very close and Greg did not miss a day with Logan. Some how Logan new and began hitting himself, pinching everywhere on his body and neck. Head butting this and hitting walls. My daughter (7 years old) already has an ASD diagnosis through our Regional Center. She received it years ago after already having received nearly two years of related services. She is what many would term "high-functioning" as she's mainstreamed at school with only pull out services for speech. This next school year she will also be pulled out for social behavior type classes.
I know anxiety can go hand-in-hand with ASD. More and more of her behaviors appear to me to be in response to… read more
If she’s now of school age (maybe depending on each state but) they typically have a kind of revaluation at that age and you’d be able to discuss the changes/behaviors that you’re seeing. Sometimes an… read more
My 5 year old son was recently diagonsed with mild Autism. His opportunities are social interaction & some sensory. He's always so in his own head or acting out his favorite cartoon that he doesn't listen to us a lot of the time. Getting him to stop & focus can be hard. He's currently receiving Speech & O.T services weekly. At school is his very well behaved & the teachers have no issues with him. But, at home it's another story. He has trouble handling his emotions & will have tantrums… read more

So I was told by a Counselor to not treat my youngest like she has Autism or any sensory issue. I know you can take this many ways. But after asking many questions of what she means, I concluded that she mean not doing sensory intergration or live with a sensory diet. Do not consider what sensory input is complicating the situation. Do not provide the sensory supports that helps them calm down. She suggest just more displine and lots of it. SOOO I guess she thinks at least High Functions… read more
