How Do I Deal With Administrators Who Allow Bad Kids To Use ASD Or ADHD Labels To Get Away With Bad Behaviors?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I live in and work in a school district that allows parents to get their kids "labeled" and then use the label to get away with bad behaviors. Punching the teacher is not an ASD or ADHD behavior. Cussing at students randomly because the teacher won't give you what you want is not related to ASD or ADHD. Walking out of class and not returning is not on the spectrum. I've watched a great district go down the tubes because the administration refuses to step up and address these behaviors. I went… read more

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

If so, what are their programs like for children diagnosed with ASD? Are you happy with their programs? Are there classes that are integrated with gen Ed? i know their schools are highly ranked for gen Ed but I can't find any info on their special Ed.

Wandering Away From The Classroom. What Does Your School Do To Prevent This?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 5 yr old has a history of wandering. Thankfully it does not happen all the time, but often enough to be concerned. I've got ID tags on all his shirts, shoes, lunch box, and backpack (he refuses to wear a bracelet), and registered him with the 'take me home' program. Certainly I'd rather not have a need for any of that to be used. What have some of your schools done to discourage/prevent a child with autism from wandering from the classroom?

I have had this problem. My son disapeared for an hour at school a few weeks ago. I guess he was in the bathroom for the hour. He is now escorted to all his special needs classes and to the bathroom… read more

Has Anyone Had To Put In A Safety Plan For Your Child In Elementary School? On Top Of Iep?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son who is in first grade has had a rough couple of months, and these past two weeks it has gotten worse since being put on new medication. We are having a safety plan meeting this week and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on what to put into place and such. He’s been getting very aggressive and running away (out the building). School work seems to be the main part of the anxiety since he is in a regular class room, with no help in there
Side note, miraculously I’m assuming the… read more

Does Anyone Have Any Experience With Montessori Schools With An ASD Child? Pros/cons?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone have any experience with montessori schools with an ASD child? Pros/cons? The diagnosing therapist said he didn't recommend it due to the lack of structure but I've been told by others it may be a good option. My son is 4 and we are looking ahead to the next school year.

A MyAutismTeam Member

We had bad luck with a Montessori, primarily because they did not have any knowledge about autism and did not want to learn. As a private school they did not have a mandate to accommodate… read more

Does Anyone's Kiddo Went From Early Childhood Special Education To Regular School System?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is currently in what they call Early Childhood Special Education Program at our local Elementary School. I'll like to believe he will eventually transition to the regular school system program but I'm curious to hear if this similar situation may have happen with any of your kids. In other words, is it something possible to transition from special education program to regular one?

A MyAutismTeam Member

Yes our Son was in early childhood special Ed in Northfield Il and transitioned with an aide to Kindergarten. We dropped the aide in 1 st grade and he went to the public school successfully until 4 th… read more

What States Have ABA Classrooms In Public Schools?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My wife and I have heard about some states that have ABA classrooms in public school. This seems very interesting to me. I like the idea of getting immediate implementation of ABA strategies if a "meltdown" starts to occur. Does your state have these classrooms? Are these classrooms teaching grade level content? What are you opinions of this idea as compared to private ABA clinics?
