How To Handle When My 4.5 ASD Child Gets Upset By Toddler Sibling's Screaming
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My NT 22 month old son has started terrible twos and will start whining and screaming frequently when displeased. So now my 4.5 year old ASD daughter has started getting upset and wailing and screaming and hitting herself in the head the minute he starts warming up for an episode. She scripts "he hit his head" (I think she remembers a time when he hit his head), and "Kate screams, Thomas yells" and then cries and makes hyperventilating sounds. I try to calm her and tell her hands down and not… read more

Ear Plug Advice Please
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi everyone, my 12 year old Jake, who has classic Autism, has extreme sensory issues. We keep a supply of soft ear plugs up at his school for when they have pep rallies and fire alarms. Often they skip the pep rallies when it's just too much (heck, those are sensory overload for me, and I don't have Autism, lol)
We went to his sister's soccer game today, and he was very upset with the clapping and cheering. We didn't bring ear plugs, but he had a chair where he sat with his clip-board drawing… read more

Does Anyone Have Suggestions For Noise Canceling Headphones For A Toddler?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Just make sure you make a game out of it. First YOU put them on and make him interested, let him put them on himself, never force him to.

Suggestions For Noise-cancelling Headphones?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 8 year old with PDD-NOS has put "noise-cancelling headphones" at the top of his Christmas wish-list. He is VERY sensitive to noises. Any suggestions on which are the best but not outrageously expensive? His teacher is looking for some as well for him to have at school.

Advice For Plane Rides
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

About to go on the first plane ride with my 2.5 year old (not a vacation - we are moving). Worried about ear pain and noise level (wont tolerate anything in or on ears), will they accommodate the amount of liquid I'll need to take (not eating solids right now), and worried about things I can't anticipate! I plan to call the airline to request early boarding, minimal lines, and tours if available. Any words of wisdom?

Hitting
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My grandson age 4.5 hits when he is overstimulated. We want to be able to take him to amusement parks and cultural places, but when there are many other children...How can we help/prepare him, so that we can all enjoy the day.

As a side note, when he does hit (usually another child) what should we say to the parents, besides "I'm sorry". We have had a couple of really irate parents after an incident. Thank you all.
