Parenting Friends Of Neurotypical Kiddos Not Understand Neurodivergent Kiddos
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have a group of friends who have been such great mom friends. But ever since Johns Diagnosis they seem to not be as helpful. They don’t quite understand the demands of therapy and ABA and the schedule juggling. They try to help but often I find them more annoying then helpful. They even try to talk to me about their Neurotypical kiddos problems at school and I try to help but also find myself getting annoyed at there problems as well. Does anyone else feel this way. Is it part of the process… read more

Thank you this makes me feel less alone that I feel this way. My friends are great moms but I sometimes wish their biggest struggles are only half of what I have to deal with on a day to day.

Jury Duty
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

So I just got a thing in the mail for jury duty. I think it would be awesome, personally. My problem is, I have absolutely no friends or even acquaintances or family with in 600 miles. Kids are in school from 9-3. But jury duty can have the possibility of lasting several days. Is having a low functions child with autism and no one to care for him and get kids off the bus a reasonable ... Reason... To be excused from jury duty??? My only othe option would be, to keep my teenage son home from… read more

Im so sorry to hear this. You must feel stressed about it. I agree with what’s been said. The behaviours are showing overwhelm or distress. This means staff need to be proactive. Sometimes those… read more

Too Many Hours Of ABA?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

It's been 5 months since my 3 years old son was diagnosed with ASD and he will start soon getting ABA 🙂

The ABA provider is recommending us 25h/week (center+home based). He will be starting as well a bridge ABA classroom at the public school in September (+25h weekly too)
I am very nervous that if we go for this total plan he is going to get too much 1:1 therapy, too intensive and too restrictive, and with no time left for spontaneous interactions and family life. He is social and verbal,… read more

Food Theif
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone have any idea on how to stop an autistic child from stealing food? My daughter steals food (mostly sweets) it's not that I don't feed her or even allow her to have the items that she takes but she continues to take them without asking and hides to eat it. I've tried putting it where she shouldn't be able to get it but she finds a way. I dont by sweets often they are truly a treat but if I cant find away to stop the sneaking then we will become a treat free zone.

So Just How Far Do You Allow Your Child To Push Himself?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 10 year old son with Aspergers is in a gifted class and tends to handle the extra work load OK. He makes friends easily but has a hard time keeping friends. He decided a year ago to join Cubscouts and we were thrilled figuring this would help him build his social skills. He has done very well. Now he has decided to join a football team and learn an instrument (violin) and continue on with his scouting. We have always encouraged our boys to be active and follow their dreams but I think he… read more
