I agree
I was told my youngest would be non verbal. I bought the book called Baby Signs (or something like that) and photocopied all the pages. I tapped them to a large wall in our kitchen. We used… read more
My daughter is 4. She's not completely non verbal but she usually does a lot of scripting before she learns to use words and phrases spontaneously. Her therapists have suggested a PECs schedule or something similiar. I told them we've tried that before and it simply doesn't work because she will not leave it alone. She likes to play with the picture cards. So I was looking into an app for it. I asked them and the conversation just sort of peters out there. It seems these new therapists are only… read more

Hi all,
Im trying to create a visual schedule for SB but my ability to find PECs or clip art and then manipulate them for what we need has turned out to be more time consuming and difficult than i thought it would be. I dont have a computer so I am using my phone mostly.
Any tips? Did you just buy something?
I use lessonpix.com. they have a vast assortment of pecs that you can print for free that I use for Tristans pecs binder. I then bought a laminating machine off Amazon for $20. I have a laptop and… read more
My son has always had a problem with safty awareness and WILL climb or problem solve to get what he wants if noone will do it for him. He recently climbed the play kitchen at school to get to the top shelf and a favorite toy. This distressed the teachers who sugested he go on medication. WHICH DISTRESSED ME. You can make them with Board Maker. They charge a fee. Sandbox learning has free visuals that you can print. I am not sure if they have Pecs type of visuals. Our son's school only uses real pictures… read more
My son's teacher told me he did not want to sign today. He did not want to sign over Spring Break but frequently grabbed my hand and brought it to the item...... He has been working on signs since August. He has picked up 3, but they are trying to use about 7 and I worry it may be too much for him. When he was 4 or so, I felt like he was making really good progress with pictures. His private speech therapist changed jobs and his insurance did not approve an ACC device and he regressed..... I used various phonics primers (preschool) to help my son learn to read. Now he can read nonsense words at his current grade level but has very low comprehension. What techniques or reading programs could help him improve vocabulary and understanding of the material he reads and listens too?
Oh, @A MyAutismTeam Member, you have to tell me about the books. It sounds like you are using books for the child to read. I only read the V/V instruction manual and adapted it to our regular… read more
I have a 4 yr old son that is non verbal. How do others keep from being depressed when people look at you because they think your child should talk? My son looks like he is a 6 yr old because he is so tall. I'm tired of the looks and stares because he can only babble. Also its so hard not hearing your child say I love you when you are pouring your heart out trying everything you can to help. I long to hear those words.
Thank you everyone again for the kids words. We use PECS and the preschool he goes to uses them also. They help a great deal.
Speech did not help our non-verbal autistic daughter at all. Her ABA therapist has done wonders with getting her to communicate in other healthy ways, teaching her to wait, point, pat, etc. instead f… read more
