Does anyone have completely mainstreamed children? If so what was your child like between the ages of 2.5 - 3.0?
@hdettwyler-I love hearing success stories about mainstreaming and perhaps I was a bit harsh when speaking about it, but the twins have had so many teachers and aides and assistants and specialist and… read more
If so, what are their programs like for children diagnosed with ASD? Are you happy with their programs? Are there classes that are integrated with gen Ed? i know their schools are highly ranked for gen Ed but I can't find any info on their special Ed.
Hi, my family is also planning to move to PUSD. Can you tell me a little more about the "Academic ASD K-2 classroom"? How do you get qualify? My son is 6 now and will be attending 1st Grade next year… read more
Our family is looking to relocate. Where is the question? We need to be in an area suitable for our special needs children. They are both very friendly and would like to have friends more like them. Vinny, my 8 year old, feels the barrier between him and his classmates. Looking for a warmer climate (I get seasonal depression very badly), good supports for the kids, a good school system, and in a supportive community. Taking any and all ideas!!!! Thanks in advance for any help.
Are you looking for an Autism only school, or mainstreaming your children in to a public school? Have you thought of moving to Ohio, Illinois etc. I live in MD, which has all four seasons. My… read more

We had our IEP yesterday, it went as well as it could go
I was able to add on a 3rd day of speech therapy for my daughter, so that was a Win!
She currently attends a special day class, it's a mix of Kinder , 1st and 2nd grade class all on the spectrum. Although I love the idea of her being in this smaller class , with more aides and possible more focus, I wonder if she'd benefit from being in another special ed class where the kids are not only more social but also more vocal. Wondering… read more
Hi dualspectrumdad,
Thank for your comments and input.
Yes, I agree with the socialization; we work on that at home as well. She's our only child, so we try our best to take her out to different… read more
I've read some posts about parents fighting to get their kid into a special ed class but I wonder if our 7 year-old daughter can get out of special ed classes some or all of the time. We will move into a another school district in a few months hopefully so I'd like the option to turn over a new leaf. I understand the school may fear she will disrupt the class or will bring down school testing average a little. The other downside may be that she won't be able to handle it but maybe she can but… read more
Sometimes mainstream is not for our kids. But you will never know unless the child tries. I had a friend whose child was in some mainstream classes but the harder the classes got the more he shut… read more
I am looking for anyone and their location to a great school district for our elementary school aged son. My husband and I are trying to relocate out of the Chicago area. We initially thought private school but are curious if their are great public schools out there. We are homeschooling now but he really does enjoy being in a school setting everyday.
Great schools in the Boston area. We are in Norfolk, MA and our son is really thriving in the public school. I also hear Newton, MA, Westwood, MA, Concord, MA have top notch special ed programs at… read more
I'm worried that Ryan will be forced to give up his unique perspective to comply and fit into mainsteam classes. He is only in Pre-K and there is pressure being applied to get him out of special ed into regular Kindergarten by next year. I feel they dont know him well enough, and with his delays I think it's setting him up for failure
Can I hear from parents with children that have gone the route into mainstreaming, and some thoughts on how to deal with the fear that my son is going to be… read more
I homeschool one of my kids for this reason. BUT not all parents can or have the patience to. So for me. I was mainstreamed but also put in special ed classes. Most the kids in Special education were… read more
His special education teacher mentioned that they may mainstream my son for half of the day because he is so intelligent. My take is leave him where he is because the small amount of children is why he is able to do so well. Give him third grade work instead of 2nd. Challenge his brain while he stays in a comfortable and low key setting.
Your son is 14 with aspergers and highly intelligent. We took a middle course sending him to private school with classrooms of 18-20, and they would move him up grades based on the subject. For… read more
I'm confused as to which kindergarten they should place my son. They are insisting on the self contained class as he has attention issues and his receptive language is not up to par.I want him in the integrated class with an aide, but they say the demands will still be overwhelming for him. Any advise??
@evak @MyAutismTeam users... Thanks for your help.I appreciate it a lot. Im going to let him stay at the self-contained class for now and see how it goes.
