Anyone Ever Try Supplements (B6, Calcium, Magnesium, DMG) To Help Reduce Self Injury? Outcomes?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I have been doing a lot of research on the internet lately to see if there is any other natural things that may be of use to my severe autistic 13 yr old daughter for self injury. I have seen a lot of people try supplements B6, Calcium, Magnesium, & DMG and some have had a lot of success. Just wondering if anyone has tried these with their child? and the outcomes? Any negative effects?

A MyAutismTeam Member

I've given my son B6 and Magnesium together before. After a few months, it seemed to lesson his hyperactivity. I gave him DMG when he was younger, but I don't remember how well it worked.

How Does A 21 Yr. Old Autistic Get A High School Diploma AFTER High School
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My son is 21 and attends our local community college. He's there to get his GED because his high school "decided" to give him a local diploma because they felt he "couldn't do it". Turns out..with alot of support...HE CAN do it.. I am pushing hard to get this GED for him, but Math always sets him back. He can't pass it because the kids have behavioral problems, not special needs. Big difference!! They are all HS dropouts!! Why can't there be a way for my son to get a high school diploma without… read more

GFCF Supplement In Drink Form?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Hey All! I am looking for ideas for a gluten free, dairy free drink for my 3yo son with ASD. I googled it and found OneSource- it is lactose free but made from milk. He is not lactose intolerant.. it is a full-on dairy allergy. No whey or casein so that isn't going to work. I know there has to be SOMETHING out there along the lines of Boost or Ensure.. with his autism he is VERY particular about what he will eat. I have him on a multivitamin but I feel like I need to do more. Any suggestions?

Our Children As Adults.
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I playfully hope there are programs that will support our children with autism as adults? With autism on the rise so much this should be a top priority. Will there ever be a cure for autism? Like me all of you want your children to adapt to life as much as possible when they are older. Especially for people who have a only child like we do. Thanks all in advance for reading my comment.

Vitamin D Supplementation
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Here is one recent case controlled study testing Vitamin D status and supplementating it showing some efficacy (for 80% of the kids with low status).

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25876214

There is also a Vitamin D hypothesis of ASD as well as correlation studies. Given most of the North American population is deficient in Vitamin D including my wife during pregnancy and I (using the 30ng/ml threshold), that is one simple thing that makes sense to test and supplement for all.

We used to… read more

Are Autistic Children Capable Of Learning How To Swim?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

I am interested in signing up my daughter for swimming lessons. She loves the water and I notice that she tries to float on her own, but I am not sure If she is capable of succeeding in that due to her lack of listening skills. Is there any other mothers out there that has a child with autism and has them in swimming lessons?

Nutritional Supplements
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

My son is basically on a liquid diet now because his food aversions have gotten so bad. There are only a few solid foods he will eat and they are junk food/carbs. He won’t eat any meat, veggies or fruit. We have been giving him Carnation Essentials in almond milk but that has a dairy base, as does things like Boost and Ensure, and we are trying to get him off dairy as we feel it contributes to his gastrointestinal problems (constipation). Does anyone know of any good non-dairy nutritional… read more

The Elephant In The Room
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question đź’

Not a question but an observation. Autism has become normalized and that’s bad for the children affected and those who are their caregivers. It’s wrong for society to “accept” a continually growing unexplained mental/behavioral health crisis and not demand answers. parents who have children with autism are asked to be stoic and fatalistic but that’s unfair. There should be more research into the cause of autism and a search for cures. I know that’s difficult when dealing with neurological… read more
