Levi will be in 4th grade this fall and his teach thinks that he is ready to move to gen ed classes..... POST IEP we have decided to NOT move him to regular gen ed yet
My son was diagnosed with autism today. He is 4 and he is now in a regular ed preschool and he never had therapy. His first IEP meeting will be held in one week. I'm totally new to this journey and I'm not sure what I should try to achieve at the first IEP meeting. Any suggestions? The psychologist who evaluated him strongly believes he should be in special ed preschool instead of his current regular ed school. Is it going to be the best decision for him to go with special ed? Very confused and… read more
if you can get a child advocate to attend on your childs behalf it may help you.
Hi everyone. My son just had a pre school education evaluation. Im happy that it turned great, my son participated, without us being present. They say he knows a lot, good vocabularies though has expressive language difficulty.
We are new to special ed . We will discuss the results next week. They think he might be able to attend Reg pre school with some therapy.
Is special ed preschool a separate class from regular pre school? I don't know what to expect. My Son will be 3 next month.
My son attends preschool that has special ed mixed in with non special ed. It has been nice to have the chance to interact with all types of kids.
Hello, I am currently appealing placement of my son in a community classroom to be able to have him included in a regular SK classroom with appropriate EA support and special education assistance as he is diagnosed with ASD and significantly delayed in language and social skills. He is however capable of learning and knows his alphabet, can count to 20 and enjoys music.
I need to find professionals with expertise with regard to ASD and the benefits of inclusion in regular classroom… read more
Thank you Vic. I am in Canada. Unfortunately we do not have the equivalent of the IDEA regulation that you have. However, in theory, school boards are supposed to follow the approach you outlined… read more
My 7-year-old autistic son is high-functioning and goes to grade 1 in a regular school and regular class. He has some challenges with paying attention, sitting, and following some rules but he is doing well academically. His teacher has told us we should consider sending him to special classes in other schools. We feel that the teacher's advice is mostly for her comfort rather than the benefit of our child. Any advice on what should be our strategy toward this problem?
My son attends regular school, but he has a IEP (Individualized Education Plan) & other support/resources available for him. I think if the school can't accommodate your son's needs then consider… read more
I'm confused as to which kindergarten they should place my son. They are insisting on the self contained class as he has attention issues and his receptive language is not up to par.I want him in the integrated class with an aide, but they say the demands will still be overwhelming for him. Any advise??
@evak @MyAutismTeam users... Thanks for your help.I appreciate it a lot. Im going to let him stay at the self-contained class for now and see how it goes.
What do you do when you can't get the regular ed teachers to 'get it'? I *am* a public school teacher, and I find myself appalled at the lack of interest or empathy from the core subject teachers. There's a real horror story here, but the bottom line is the teachers really appear to have little interest in even attempting to understand or learn even general information about ASD, much less the specifics regarding my child. My approaches have ranged from 'teacher to teacher' to 'mad as hell… read more

My son is currently in what they call Early Childhood Special Education Program at our local Elementary School. I'll like to believe he will eventually transition to the regular school system program but I'm curious to hear if this similar situation may have happen with any of your kids. In other words, is it something possible to transition from special education program to regular one?
Yes our Son was in early childhood special Ed in Northfield Il and transitioned with an aide to Kindergarten. We dropped the aide in 1 st grade and he went to the public school successfully until 4 th… read more
Hello. My autistic son turned 7 and I know he’s supposed to start school. The schools in our area do not have enough support/resource for him. He was referred to a private school for autism but he is on the waiting list and 4th in that list. They said realistically it may take 4 years to make it to the top of the list. What do we do in the meantime? If he can’t start school until years later, how will he be at “grade level”? Also, how does grade level and state testing work with children who… read more

My son goes to a ABA therapy center all day instead of the public school. They have worked wonders with my son and he loves going.
