My daughter is 6 years old and has been recently diagnosed with Autism she still sucks her thumb which I don't mind at bedtime but she can do it through out the day in public and people pay attention to it.
Is this a normal sensory thing and do I ignore it and ask people to stop commenting hoping she will stop if it's not brought to her attention or do I try to stop her doing it by using a sensory chew toy?
Hello @A MyAutismTeam Member I sucked my thumb until I was 8. Then I had such a huge overbite I had to have 6 years of orthodontist work to correct it . Interesting thing is that an adult I… read more
My son has a finger nail lifting from the nail bed about half way up his nail. It is away from the skin but the top half is still connected. Anyone else ever experience this? Any suggestions?
Treatment for onycholysis (nail lifting) usually involves keeping nails as short as possible so that they are unlikely to snag on objects and be pulled off the nail bed. Another strategy is to avoid… read more
It's like crack to him... he stashes them and will sleep with 2 or 3 of them to make sure he doesn't lose it in the middle of the night. He is SO sensory and this is the ONLY thing he can effectively use to self-regulate, especially away from home (car, restaurant, church, etc). He does not use it at school or during the days on weekends... his teeth are a mess! I'd like to ditch it by his fourth birthday in March :(
Bubble gum stays hard. I know some people give their kids a wash cloth? I dont think its too sanitary, but!
Does anyone else have an issue with an older child sucking their thumb? My daughter has level 1 autism and she will be 11 next month. She still sucks her thumb at night and it’s caused some issues with her teeth already. But the orthodontist said the first step is getting her to stop the thumb sucking. We have tried a Thumb Guard, gloves, incentives and nothing has worked yet. During the day she is very motivated by a star chart to quit, but at bedtime she gets very anxious and can’t fall asleep… read more
She definitely wants to communicate. She talks all the time but I constantly have to ask her to slow down and say it again so I can understand and that gets frustrating for her. I’m going to look into… read more
As most of you may have experienced, we have been dealing with sensory-seeking challenging behaviors for a very long time, they come and go and vary in topography. The current behavior my 13 year old engages in that has been going on for more than 2 years is playing with his saliva. I am a behavior analyst and I, along with his therapist have tried almost every recommended alternative such as oral aides (chew toys, chewing gum, wearing a mask, playing with corn starch, chia paste etc), spitting… read more
Does he respond to peer pressure/ care about what others think? You could explain why behavior is not appropriate and how it makes other people feel including you- that it may frighten other people… read more
You have to identify whether or not it is a form of sensory input for him. If so, you need to have a more appropriate behavior to take its place. When you see him biting his nails, give him a chewy… read more
My autistic son will be 13 years old in May. He still sucks his thumb. I know that is how he soothes himself. Is it time to start working on stopping this habit or do I just let it go if it soothes him?
It is important to set age-appropriate expectations. My parents always did. I feel this is a time and place matter.
How Do I Stop Diaper Picking?
My daughter sticking her hands down the back of his diaper and picking them and leaving cotton everywhere. I have recently caught her eating it
We ended up using the Little Keeper Sleeper with our son until he was fully out of diapers. A snug fit is key. We went up a size trying to get ahead of a growth spurt, and he was able to pull his… read more
