Chicago Public Elementary Schools
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, we are moving to Chicago this summer and searching for a neighborhood with a good elementary school around. My son has moderate autism and has been thriving since he started ABA and special education at 3. Based on my research so far, it seems that we should not expect the same level of educational services from Chicago Public Schools as what we have now here in Boston. But I would love to know if any of you have had some positive experience with CPS concerning your child's special… read more

Hi Cate2, we no longer live in the area, but I heard some nice things about public schools in suburban cities north of Chicago. Good luck!

Recommend An Insurance Plan For Autism Coverage In MA?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm searching for a new insurance plan for my son with ASD as he will graduate from EI in a few months. He doesn't get SSI (our income is just slightly higher than those who qualify) but we're applying for Common Health. Meanwhile, his current insurance will expire almost at the same time when EI ends, so we need a new insurance plan for him so that he can continue to receive ABA. I've been thinking about BlueCrossBlueShield, Harvard Pilgrim, and possibly Neighborhood Health Plan. Does anyone… read more

Thank you very much evak77! Your answer was very helpful. We will have our IEP meeting soon, so let's see what they say. Our SSI was rejected due to our income level. But we've applied for… read more

Special Preschool Recommendations In The Greater Boston Area?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My family and I are moving to Massachusetts this summer. My son is currently 2 years old with ASD and will turn 3 early next year. We've not decided where to live and still looking around housing. My work will be in Cambridge, and we consider Watertown, Belmont, Arlington, or perhaps Newton. Which school district would you recommend for special preschool? These towns are usually well rated for public schools but I'd like to know which town(s) would probably provide better services for… read more

How Long Have You Waited For Diagnosis At Riley Hospital, Indianapolis?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We're on the waiting list for autism diagnosis while my son is receiving EI. He's 25 months. Our pedi sent a referral to Riley Hospital for Children (IN) more than two months ago, but still no words but that their intake coordinator will contact us when an appointment can be scheduled. If any has been to Riley, how long was your wait time? We're really hoping to have him diagnosed as he still does not interact with other kids (plus some sensory issues). Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, pennysisco. It looks like they just want me to wait till their intake calls me. But I'll keep checking even if the same answer returns. thanks.

When Should I Move To A Different State (Massachusetts)?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We're planning to move to Massachusetts with 2 yrs old. He is currently on EI and we live in Indiana. Soon we'll get a diagnosis (and our OT says it's likely to be ASD). Since we def. want a smooth transition (for therapy-wise) for our son, we should decide whether this summer (he's still 2) or next January (he'll turn 3) would be better for his therapy plans. What happens if we move in the middle of EI? Does this mean another waiting for a new evaluation by a MA Early Intervention team? Or… read more

Summer... start calling today and find out how to register what you need to do. They test here months before school starts if you want to get him in the ECFE/ECSE program.

my son is also in the same grade. You stated that you are afraid they may "graduate him". Is this what you meant?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

How Does One Grow Up With Older ASD Sibling?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My youngest is 3 and really doesn't understand that his older sister (5) has autism. To him, it's natural to see a meltdown or her yelling and laughing late at night. It makes me wonder how all this is affecting him but I think he's thinking that's just his impulsive sister doing crazy stuff as she has for his whole life. It's probably fun in a way but he does copy some of her habits.

A MyAutismTeam Member

Both of my kids have autism. My oldest is 14 and my youngest is 4. Definitely an adjustment to get them to get along. Both was diagnosed early, but my youngest was able to receive services quickly

Co-sleeping Yay Or Nay
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have had my two children (6&4) sleeping with me for the last 6 months or so exclusively. Before that, my daughter with sleep issues would get up between 10pm and 3am every night and crawl in bed, or wake up no later than 4am daily, or both. For me it's less disruptive to my sleep to just have my kids in here, although privacy (didn't have much to begin with) goes out the window for the most part. So, I gave up. The benefits outweigh the drawbacks right now. Others in my household don't agree… read more

I agree that what works for your family is what is best for your family. Personally I never let my kids sleep in my bed. I have two neuro typical kids (now adults) and one teen with ASD and sleep… read more
