My child is about to start school, he is 6 years now, diagnosed with Autism at the severe end. During the last 4 years we had an IBI/ABA at home and he was for a while in a Nursery school. He is non-verbal, but able to communicate with an iPad and pictures. A lot of sensory issues, but overall a very gentle and well behaved child, no big meltdowns, no aggressive behavior
He was placed in a class for kids with mild disabilities. The other option was an Autism (only) class, but we were not… read more
I don't know about Canada but in Wi main streaming is the way to go as long as you can get a para educator to be with your son to help interpret the social and academic aspects of school. I would… read more

We had a very bad experience last week with my son jumping up off the dentist chair after receiving nitrous oxide screaming "you have a needle!" We did not get the tooth out. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck using an anxiolytic like Xanax or Ativan in a similar situation. My son is 10 and large for his age so it's difficult to just restrain him physically.
I would not recommend using nitrous. For most of our kids, an abnormal methylation pathway prevents the typical metabolism of this drug. Agree with @assembingmysonspuzzles

Anyone have good or bad experience with the two working together? Are they normally kept separate? Does anyone find conflicts in the two?
We did both during preschool. ABA always seemed to bring skills faster while school can help adjust to a group setting. It can be hard to get the 2 to communicate. I would bring ABA therapist to IEP… read more
We just moved to the 33810 zip code a few months ago,My husband and I don't have any family that we can trust with our son who is asd and trusting a daycare is out of the question. I am trying to find a night time job that starts at 7 pm so that we can make ends meet. Does anyone know of any jobs that start at that time or a legit work from home job?
When our insurance was not good we hired our own line therapist. We used a student who was very good and had experience. A BCBA designed programs and trained us both. After that we used a hospital… read more

I would stay on top of it as you are, but work with your child until it is settled. Maybe your therapist can give you activities . Not sure of your child's level, but you can use work books, language… read more
My son is 18, he attended a special school from 2-16. He was very happy there until he started getting very anxious about the thoughts of leaving and going to college. All demands on him resulted in extreme behaviour towards me. For 2 years now we have been in a bad place...he was excluded from his specialist college saying they couldn't support him any longer. No other education setting was offered and social care to the role. Introducing him to support staff which he hates. For 2 years he has… read more
