Members enthusiastically shared resources and funding options for obtaining iPads for children with autism, with several highlighting that many insurance companies now cover iPads as communication devices since they are more cost-effective than traditional assistive technology. Several members pointed to specific programs including Danny's Wish Foundation, The Puzzling Piece's iPad Challenge (which provides free iPads through fundraising for Autism Speaks), state grants, county consumer support programs, and regional center assistance. A recurring theme was the transformative impact iPads have on autistic children's communication and development, with one member describing being amazed daily by what their nearly three-year-old son can accomplish using the device.

Have you heard of the iPad challenge from The Puzzling Piece? We got Nathan's iPad for free! I highly recommend it. No gimmicks, this is totally for real. I have even met the couple who run the program, Melissa and Brett, they came to our Autism Speaks Walk this fall. Seriously, look into it. It's a little bit of work, but you will end up spreading awareness, giving back to Autism Speaks AND get your iPad:

I am currently getting my son evaluated for communication devices, I was told that once that is done his insurance will most likely pay for an ipad for him. from what I understand a lot of insurances are paying for the ipad now because it has been proven to help most autistic children to communicate

IF you can't get one discounted then you can also check with your county. We were able to qualify for the consumer support grant and had to have it written into the plan.
