My husband has a job offer in houston, and to continue to pay for the ABA, speech and ot we need insurance. Every health insurance company I have talked to either wont cover us because he is autistic or because they flat out do not cover mental health. HELP!!! I thought Texas had mandated autism coverage for insurance companies, at least up to age 9. I hope this helps.

Sorry I never answered life has been wild and crazy and I just now started back on the site. We actually moved back to the Dallas area Houston was awful for us. We now have our kiddo in a great school district that provides him some good therapy and now that we are here we have him on the waiting list to do the after school aba program at his last place it had the dars program which goes by your income. Not sure where in Houston you live but I believe there is an aba program there that is funded by DARS, it is a state funded program.

What did you end up doing? We're in Houston also with complete autism therapy insurance exclusion (self funded policy through the company we work for). I've tried to get a child only policy through an insurance company on our own, but in Texas child only policies aren't mandated. Now through ObamaCare, children are excluded from preexisting conditions, but I'm having a hard time understanding how to "capture" this. I've also looked at privately purchasing a family policy, but the speech therapy is so limited that I'd reach the max in less than 1 month. It seems like there has to be a better answer than paying this all out of pocket, but short of changing jobs, I'm not sure what it is. I'd be happy to hear if you found a better way!
