OR Whats Everyones Thoughts On Services In CA Or OR. For That Matter What State Is Best?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

i am lightly thinking of moving to CA or OR. My biggest concern is finding care for my severly autistic daughter. she currently has Speach, OT and MUSIC therapy as well as a great developmental pediatric DR.Oh and respit and habilitation are much needed too. We would also need a homeschool or internet school option because she just cant handle the school yet. any thoughts on services?

California has the Regional Centers that will fund OT, speech, social skills groups, respite, etc. They also have virtual charters and many districts have Independent Study Programs as well that you could get IEP services through. The flip side is that the state's severe fiscal crisis has caused huge budget cuts for both the Regional Centers and the school districts. Also, depending on where specifically you would be moving to, the general cost of living is insanely high (this is particularly true in the San Francisco Bay Area, the LA area, and the San Diego area). I can't say that I would recommend moving to CA for that reason.

In response to the regional centers, My experience has not been great. Actually, it's been almost non existent. They will only help if he/she is severe enough. Meaning if you have aspergers or any "high functioning" form of autism they will not do anything for you.

I hear that San Diego does a lot of research on autism and have a lot of resources that are Free through the school district.....

Hey I echo your post @A MyAutismTeam Member we just moved here this year, and the budget cuts have had us chasing services. I am a rather good advocate but my child is no longer in the early intervention classification any longer, and getting any services as you agr in
California is a bit of a battle. My son is not aspergers of true HFA. Just verbal and a good student, and generally dosent get his needs met because he saves his ment downs for me and home. So school does minimum and regional center originally only offered respite (less than an eight of what I had in vt) to start in two month.... But it's now almost three still waiting. And even agency wants me to go to a different agency. For EVERYTHING. I suppose you may be sorry you asked. I'm told that once things are in place I will be happy. But we r probably going to need to change behavior agencies next too! And we haven't even finished eval
