Also, I would ask the doctor what he recommends over the counter or maybe what to add to his diet. Doctors will work with you if you don't want a Rx.
Ask the pharmasist if there is an otc pill you can take. Contact a nutritionist to see where you can get it naturally. Flax seed is availible at sams club and easily added to yogourt etc.
There is something called Lovaza that is a Rx fish oil for cardiovascular disease. Basically it's just a concentrated dose of what you can buy at the store. Lovaza has ~500 mg. EPA and ~400 mg. DHA. My DD is taking 2 of the Coromega packets daily and gets ~700 mg EPA and ~450 mg. DHA from those. Having it all in one pill is certainly convenient, but the cost is ridiculous if your insurance doesn't cover it.
Most prescription vitamins are the same vitamin, or a vitamin mixed with something for sensitivities. In those cases, it would be written as such or with a specific name. I'd think it is just the same vitamin.
You should compare what's in the prescription vs what can be bought in the supplement section or on vitacost.com. I've never heard of this being a prescription and would be interested in hearing the difference. good Omega 3 supplements are around $9-$20 a bottle on vitacost.com
