Starting Out Homeschooling?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I could really use some encouragement and advice, where things stand now are that my 5yo is in a contained class for SK, but its been a complete nightmare, handling his health is trickier than I'd like it to be, however his learning styles lean closer to what I was like growing up, so I'm eager to take on more responsibility, and have been struggling to wrangle control of his therapists who visit the school but are under the school board because he is a student. I also have a 4yo who has more… read more

I live in the US so I don't know how much I can help you although I have heard a lot of Canadians who homeschool for some of the very reasons you are wanting to. There are all kinds of ways to deal with social issues while homeschooling and there are all kinds of free curriculums available on the internet. If you email me, I'll give you a list of sites I've used through the years. My email address is [[email: [[email: [[email: (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators) Also, I can go to some of my groups and see if I can put you in touch with some fellow Canadian homeschoolers too.

time4learning.come Also, there's a site called The Christian Learning Hub. Time4Learning is online, $19.95 a month. I'm getting ready to start homeschooling mine for the first time and am unsure of what to do, so I'm going to try it. Christian Hub has forums, you can make friends on it and talk to other homeschooling parents, etc., and for $15 a year, you can download all the curriculum, etc., that you want off of their site. I'm planning on using that too. Hope it works out for you!

It sounds like you feel pretty confident in your skills to be adaptive and innovative to teach your two young children. Homeschooling has really grown in the last decade so there's so many options for curriculmn and resources. Of kids on the spectrum, a good quality ABA program is very beneficial and there is a lot of information out there to help you do this as well. In my community we also have some "homeschooling schools". Basically they are schools that provide field trips, tutoring services, a speciality classes (ie music, robotics, etc) to homeschooling families. It was a nice break from the day-in day-out schedule for my son. Your community may have something similar. I know some families do swaps. So a mom that is really good at teaching literature will teach that for both families and the other mom will teach science. In our community, we have a lot of vendors that have sprung up that offer science labs, music, art, gym classes, etc.

I recommend that you start doing some web searches to see what is available in your area. While you are on there, you'll see a ton of information that's for distance learning, resources, etc. The problem is not a lack of information but too much. But I think its a good way to get ideas and start planning your approach.

Finally, I encourage you to treat this like a job. Some families are too casual about homeschooling and therefore their children do not get a full year of school. Now public schools waste a lot of time too. But set school hours, plan out how you are going to cover all the material in the year, and then adjust up or down as you see how your child progresses and what works (and what doesn't). Good luck!
