PDD- NOS or aspergers whats the difference? First test score were asp. second were PDD NOS. nothing changed on comments or scores. exactly the same, yet DX changed? Has this happened to anyone else? They did not see him again and the copy they sent us were just that a copy of each report. I just don't get it and am trying to find out what this means. I was told it will make a big difference in the services he receives @ school. Not for the better.
It is my experience that many parent of children with Aspergers are going through what you are because of the changes to the DSM. Insurance companies and school districts do not want to cover services that they are not legally obligated to pay for and the different diagnosis come with different services. You may also be told that Autism or your child's diagnosis should be listed second and that developmental delay shoul be listed first in an IEP because you will get better services. Do NOT fall for this. In the long run you want your child's paper trail to reflect his or her actual condition, not a category someone believes fits the mold getter. I was told my daughter should be listed under developmental delay and if I had listened she would not have been placed in her autism class or have the one on one aid that she does today, because they would not have been obligated to pay for it under developmental delay. If you don't agree with the change in diagnosis, question it, seek a second opinion if necessary. You do not have to accept these changes if they were made without your consent or signature. If you think he should remain under his first diagnosis, question what specific changes in his condition or behavior caused the change in diagnosis, if they cannot offer compelling evidence, then demand a re-evaluation. Just something to think about.
the main reason for combining PDD-NOS aspbergers Rhetts Autism and others was becuase they were finding that in many cases the key differance between those diagnosed with A and those diagnosed with B was the diagnostition. meaning if you sent the same kid to two differeent psyc/nuerologists you would get two different daignoses becuase one prefers to say Aspbergers another catagorizes eveyone as autism. the directions for choosing is also subjective (in DSM-IV) because if you have ever read it there is little differance between them. one wants more OCD behavior marks one says "not better defined by another disorder" (diagnosis of elimination). this is one of hte rationale for combining all the dxes into one ASD in DSM-V
Yes, I understand this However. All of the scores. The comments. Parent and teacher scores. Were done and the #s = DX, aspergers. Then an exact copy with absolutely NO changes. DX, PDD-NOS. This changed his services. He was no longer able to receive certain classes and help. I am getting help in this and it was not o.k. Has it happened to anyone else. How common is this?
