my HS senior has asbergers and bipolar. We just had his transition IEP meeting this week and the question came up about this "label" would offer him more supportive services during the transition period between HS and age 22 as well as at age 22 when he is moving on to the next phase of life. I agree with both. In many states, autism is covered under disability services while ED is covered under mental health or behavioral services. By keeping both labels, your son may qualify for services from both branches. Secondly, some states have additional services for those with a dual-diagnosis.
I don't think one would be any better than the other is as far as support goes. You really need to look at where his primary need is at this time and make that label primary.
I have have a similiar question my son's IEP says multiple health impaired instead of Autism and I'm not sure which is better.
ED is either Emotional Disability or Emotional Disorder.
I was wondering what ED is before I make a suggestion. I'm a special education teacher in Michigan and we don't have that label in our IEPs. So many different labels that "bounce" around from state to state...
