The World As My 13 Year Old Asperger Boy Sees It
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've never posed a question before but my son who I see as a square peg in a round world is difficult to interpret his way of thinking. I'd like to know of additional resources (books preferably) on how to understand what he's going through and the best ways for me to COPE. BTW I did come across what I think might be a great book - "Six-Word Lessons on Growing Up Autistic: 100 Lessons to UnderstandHow Autistic People See Life" but it's not available at our library. If anyone has read this… read more

I've read "Six-Word Lessons..." and found it helpful, especially with describing sensory issues. It is very easy to digest and describes life through an Aspie's eyes, but it does not necessarily have any coping strategies. I think it would be especially helpful to give to teachers/grandparents, etc.

My son read "Freaks, Geeks, and Asperger Syndrome" and found it really helpful. After reading one part of it, he actually looked at his grandmother and said "It's like this book was written about me. That's me, I do a lot of those things."

There are a few that can be recommended. Have you tried searching Asperger books through Amazon? They have quite a few you may find helpful. My son is 10 and was diagnosed with Asperger's about a year ago. I often refer to him as "fitting a square peg into a round hold". ;-) Good luck!
