is it true that autistic kids can not remember things they read or learned??
my 4 years old(will be 5 next month) used to count 1 to 10, read A to H, but now she seems to forget everything she learned. but she does remember all other things such as how many and what kind of toys she has or where her father put chocolate or what is bought last night which has been unpacked or share with her, which stuff belong to where etc.
My kiddo remembers stuff that he is interested in with no problems. Reading and other things we have to work much harder at because his interest is low. I think it has a lot to do with relevance for them, too. Think about it...she sees no relevance in counting but the chocolate is a different story. Maybe she should get chocolate for counting, etc!!!!
It is most likely not a memory issue but a comprehension issue. Interest does play a big part in this issue is more that ASD interrupts with the learning process and often repetitive learning is required to help the child. One of the main issues with ASD children and young ones especially is regression. One day they have a skill and then for no reason they loose it. You just have to try to reinforce teaching so the child can hold on to what they learn
One of my girls famious sayings is " mummy do u remember last year when" last year could mean yesterday, last week or last year lol . She also rembers books that i read to her .
Very true about the high interest. Also should consider the childs' ability to generalize a skill. Bethany could for example do something at home that she couldn't at school. Perhaps the material they had differed or they used a different prompt. It's real important to teach our kids a skill with some variety so they don't get stuck and only can count a specific thing or with one prompt or person. Just some thoughts....
My son remembers everything from what was said last year to who was on the tele right then. Each child is different and regression can happen with autistic children. I would run it past my pediatrican. Good luck and hope this helped.
