Losing Teeth
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Our sons front teeth are starting to get loose now and we can see the start of his adult teeth breaking the gum behind them. I need some reassurance or advice as to how this will go for kids on the severe/moderate spectrum. We're really worried he might swallow them if they get loose enough or pull it himself when it's not ready to be removed. Any advice/suggestions/reassurance for us? Should we go to the dentist to have them professionally removed?

Hi,

As a pediatric denitst, this is one of the most common problems we face. Primary teeth (baby teeth) are naturally lost when the permanent tooth erupts and resorbs the root of the primary tooth. When the permanent tooth erupts in a position that does not allow for favorable resorption of the primary tooth root, over-retention of the primary tooth occurs. Typically, these teeth are difficult for the child to remove on their own or even a parent helping. If left long enough, the gum tissue can become inflamed and irritated causing minor discomfort usually leading to poor oral hygiene in the area of the affected primary tooth.

It is best to see a pediatric dentist to have your child properly evaluated. Aspiration is a concern of ours if the child has a history of aspiration or is considered at risk of aspiration (i.e. some conditions predispose children to aspiration). Hopefully I've answered your questions.

My sister has CP and growing up she swallowed several baby teeth/molars and never had any issues from it. It sounds awful, but it probably isn't harmful.

My 9 yr old son pushes on his loose teeth with his tongue. I used to be worried about him swallowing his teeth but I find them on the floor. Been doing this site his teeth first started falling out. Now mommy gets to scavenger hunt for them. By tooth 5 you'll be a pro. Always good to see a dentist who specializes in special needs. They're out there. Hope this helps.

My son has pulled several teeth out before they were ready, but they were loose already. No harm was done. There was a little blood for a few minutes, but even when they are ready they sometimes bleed. It just meant it took a little while longer for the new teeth to grow in; but if the new teeth are already starting to come in, that's not an issue.
