Hi there everyone. My son is entering kinder this august. Been in special education preschool for last 2 and a half years. He is being placed in a typical setting kinder class with a general aid. Not a one to one. He smart and social. But is attention span is a bit wobbly and struggles with academics--tho smart. I have faith in him. Yet a bit nervous. Big new step for all of us. Anyone else been thru this ? How did it go ?
My son's transition to kindergarten went smoother than I thought it would. The only problems were that he became overwhelmed with the large class size and the noise. He also started a year late so was a little older than the other kids yet he was far behind them in most other ways. He wasnt fully potty trained either so that was an issue because the school didn't give him any aid to help him throughout the day. Once we started with a special education teacher for short periods a day, he was a lot calmer. Unfortunately regular classes were impossible for him and ended up in a life skills classroom by grade 2 where he thrived over time. But overall, I was more worried about the transition than I needed to be.
We are looking forward to the same after summer and more worried about transition than anything else. We have already taken him to the classroom a few times and he at knows the teacher and at least one other student which should help. Our son is pretty excited about it and let's hope it continues after the first day.
