Broccoli Sprouts And Autism
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Why eating broccoli sprouts (raw) may be a good idea? One of the important ingredient in it is sulforaphane which showed efficacy in a small double blind ASD trial that was recently published. 50% of the kids in treatment group responded with significant improvements (social, more normal behaviour and verbal language); none in control group. It is a powerful and very promising antioxidant with many different properties that is under research.

I am guessing that was probably the low-oxalate diet that the biomed physician recommended. Broccoli sprout would be in the medium category in terms of oxalate content. However, if above study is even remotely applicable for even say 25% of the ASD cases, it is worthwhile trying. The hard part is getting the sulforphane dosage - the pills do not usually contain the enzyme to make it and rely on the gut bacteria to make it (one study showed pills gave 1/10th amount as eating raw broccoli sprout). So, we are going try to juice the raw broccoli sprouts and see how it goes.

Some kids with ASD actually react to broccoli. One of the diets that our biomed physician had us try eliminated that and similar cruciferous vegetables. I can't remember which specific one because it was a couple years ago and didn't make a difference for my DD so we didn't continue it. But like so many other things, what helps some folks with ASD may cause negative effects in others.
