Can My Childs Vitamin Be Causing Him To Have Staring Spells?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

In August, we started noticing that my 4 year old son (will turn 5 in less than a week) was having staring spells. Usually everyday, multiple times a day. He never did this before.

Around 3 weeks ago, I stopped giving my son these vitamins. Around this same time the staring spells slowed down. I can not say for sure that they have stopped completely but they have for sure been happening way less. He just started a new school (Head Start - autism class) and his teacher has barely noticed any… read more

Hello there Alyssaa. I understand your worry. I have 13 year old son. When he was 3 he would space out and just stare into space. I was told by his Dr. he could be having a seizure just sitting there I was sooo scared. I did take him to be tested and he was fine. You are such a great parent. Looking into every detail. Your child is lucky to have you. REgarding vitamins. I don't know. I was referred to this "DAN"Dr. early in my sons diagnosis where I was desperate. I spent thousands of dollars on vitamins, kelation, etc. and found that it didn't really do much for him. I even gave him B12 shots every other day. This is just with my son. Maybe your child will benefit. All children are different. Certainly give it a try. I recenlty weened my son off of Zoloft 100 mg he had been on for 5 years. I felt that it was just too much and maybe his anxiety was better. When he was off completley he had a rough 2 weeks of crying spells, anger, anxiety but then he was fine. I read that Omega, Fish Oil was good for moods in children with ASD so I said ok why not. I also heard that Krill has the highest concentrate of fish oil or however that is sorry, but I bought some (expensive by the way) and he seemed to mellow out. I since ran out and I do see he is very moody but then again he is a teenage boy so I don't know if that is just testosterone or what. I will get him back on and see. Good luck I hope it all turns out well with the testing. Please let me knwo if you have any questions or if you just want to vent.

I think that dosage for fish oil (Nordic natural) is fine for kids. Used to take that but switched to higher dose. We take 2x that dosage which is more adult dosage/pill. These are all therapeutic dosage. Studies typically use much higher dosages (1+ grams) but haven't tried that.

@A MyAutismTeam Member Do you know how much fish oil is acceptable to give him in a day? I was giving him the Nordic Naturals Children's DHA before and it said to only give him 1/2 Teaspoon per day (does not seem like much EPA 190mg, DHA 255mg, Other Omega-3s 105mg). I have read of other mothers giving their children more of fish oil though, a certain amount of mg a day. Do you know how much of this he should take? I want him to get as much as he can without having too much fish oil a day. And what do you mean by "therapeutic dosage"?

@A MyAutismTeam Member Oops. Yes it is the Natural Vitality CALM. I was just wondering if it is supposed to calm down and if so, if that could be causing my son to zone out. That particular multi has a lot more than ingredients than a typical multivitamin. The only ingredient that stands out which is not usually in a multi and may decrease seizure threshold is DMAE. Don't take that is you already have evidence of seizures.

We use multi and B-vitamins from Thorne research or klaire labs and provide Fish oil with DHA/omega 3 separately in much higher dosage (this may help reducing seizures according to studies as well but need higher therapeutic dosage).
