School Won't Allow Days Off For Therapies?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 4-year old son with HFA had just started special Ed December 2014. He goes there's Mon to Fri 7:45 to 10:45 am. To give him opportunity to mingle with regular kids, I enrolled him in regular daycare from 11 to 3. Starting January, I have contracted through my private insurance ABA 8:30 to 12:00, ST 12:30 to 1:00 and OT 1:00 to 2:00 on Thursdays and Fridays. These are the only openings that these therapies have so I am willing to take them. I asked the school if he would be allowed to attend… read more

Hello everyone. I am grateful to all your support. The school officially opened today and I stopped by to talk to the counselor about taking my son off for his day-long therapies. I told her that in their attendance policy it clearly states that such appointments for therapies are excused and that I will provide excuse documents for them all. She said she will talk to her principal about it and let me know this week. I told her we are starting this Thursday and that had been decided. And I said if they won't allow my son to have those, then I expect the school to provide 8 hours ABA, 2 hours OT and additional 1 hour ST every week. And yes I used the phrase "it's discriminating against a child with disabilities " if they will be a hindrance to his progress. Thanks NameNotReleased for that one! I think she got the point clearly.

That makes no since to me. My sons school has no choice but to allow me to pull him out for his therapy sessions. They are all excused! They cannot deny you that nor kick him out because of it. My son is also 4 and leaves school twice a week for speech therapy.

I can see that special ed helps a lot and I don't want to drop it. I also would like him to have as much ABA we can afford. It's the schedule that's difficult right now.

No Jackie, the ABA people here don't come to the school. And my son's school schedule is only from 7:45 am to 10:45 am. His ABA takes longer than that.

So technically they have not given me their final word on this leave for therapy issue. I'm just taking my son to his therapy and I'll wait and see what kind of response they will give me. I'm hoping to hear from the principal soon so I can rest my case.
