We are looking for reliable self help resources which we can conduct at home, on top of engaging third party help.
Our son's therapist uses Buddy Bear Books by Linguistics. We ordered a couple. They come with reusable stickers. They have different versions. We have the WH questions and Becca Bunny feelings. We ask the question such as '"Why does Buddy Bear need an umbrella?" He puts on the umbrella sticker and answers "because it is raining" or we prompt him. Hanen more than Words DVD/Book are meant to be parent delivered.Building play skills helps language. Demonstrate and narrate. Teach to Play DVd's helped with this. You can create your own materials with magazines, books, felt boards, and puzzles. We had our son answer a question about a simple puzzle piece, crawl through his tunnel and match it. We worked on core strength and language together. Early Start Denver Model book is great. We used the version with strategies for Parents.
Songs are helpful, especially if your little one likes music. For some reason my son learned and still learns new words from songs that he hears. It opened up the lines of communication for us. He's 8 and now we can't get him to stop talking. Also, if your child isn't in speech therapy I would strongly suggest getting them in. Once in, you can communicate with the therapist about the activities that your child best responds to so that you can duplicate those at home.
@A MyAutismTeam Member that's a fantastic sharing!! Like the combination of physical crawling and matching the answer.
@A MyAutismTeam Member thanks! What should we look out for in speech therapy?
