Writing A Book
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I wanted to get everyone's opinion on something. I write a blog on autism and have been told many times I should write a book about my families story. I did reach out to a publisher and they suggested the same thing. Have any of you written a book before, or do you even think I should do it based on my blog posts. I am on Wordpress under my same screen name here if you want to check it out.

Thanks for the info, I had not actually looked into the numbers. My family is not anything special in terms of autistic families so there is no hook there.

The publisher I spoke to advised me to use the blog posts I already have and elaborate a bit so most of the content is already there, and most of the heavy work is done so to speak. They told me that my writing style is different from most because I write the way a speak and it hits home with people more than standard writing does.

My fear is that they are telling me this so they make money and do not care as much about how well the book does volume wise.

To tell the truth the writing is therapeutic and I do it while the children are at activities. I can generally come up with a three page post in about an hour so writing just comes naturally to me. If you met me I would talk your ear off that is just how I am.

Ultimately I am not trying to make lots of money and be rich I am more looking to help others with the knowledge I have from my experience. I know one book will not make lots of money but if others would actually read it, this would make it worth it to me.

I checked on amazon.com and there are almost 1,700 books in English on autism. Unless you've got a "hook" that makes you and your family's story a compelling story, you are just an another family with dealing with autism. Writing a book may be self-therapeutic and you may help out some readers but the reality is writing a book takes a lot of time and effort unless you're a professional writer. Even professional writers wouldn't call it easy and you will not be a professional if you don't intend to make a decent profit. 15 or 10 years ago you may have had an original angle but it's amazing how many books have come out. Half of the 774 books that got a rating of 4 stars or above came out since 2010. Of those the TENTH book in still in print was written in 1995. The first year when 10 books about autism was written was in 2001.

I love reading books parents write about their autism experience. I say you go for it. I'm waiting for them to make a movie out of "The Spark" by Kristine Barnett. I read at night before bed. People that love to read find the time. :)

Jmmm that would be great! If you decide to write the book you have to consider a huge range of different children, behaviors, disorders etc... Visit them, spent time with each and one of different social, emotional behaviors that autism have. Families, siblings uff! It would be long tough and expensive. Are you up for the challenge? Because if you do it right. On the end it will be awesome! Good luck and count with me and my son Tommy in Florida

Thanks for writing back, that is what I was thinking myself so I was unsure I should bother doing it.

This is not about the money because I do not write for that reason. I do not even have adds on my blog. I write for my sanity and to hopefully help others understand what it is like. In all actuality it is going to cost me money to do it so if people wouldn't read it then it would not be worth doing.
