Opt Out Or Not?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am wondering if it would be advantageous, or not, to opt out of state-wide testing. I wonder if I'll be able to get progress reports any other way? Opt out? or not? Why? or why not?

I feel it is important to allow your child to participate in testing. Chances are they will probably perform below grade level and you can use it to your advantage at IEP meetings etc. Problem is when my child does not perform well I am often told that they did not put forth enough effort or that they are just lazy absolutely do not agree with that.

The problem is that in most states no one has clear answers and if your child is HFA and they are a little behind you may be hurting them by not doing the testing. If you waive it the child gets more of a certificate than a diploma at graduation and no one can give answers as to what colleges think of the certificate.

If you want your child to go to college then you are taking a chance they won't get in with the waiver and certificate. As it is now there are colleges that have programs for children with disabilities, or there are at least in my area that will help them achieve their college goals and get a degree.

We let our son do the testing with an IEP giving him special accommodations and so far he has handled it. The staff at the school who is actually good to us is afraid of the waiver because they do not even know what will happen and they don't want to hurt his chances of college.

Wow. @A MyAutismTeam Member, so those people who are opposed to common core so they are waiving the state testing are jeopardizing their child's chance to go to college. My son is in what they call "life skills" which isn't ANY academics. (HUH?) It isn't even a "special day class" but I thought it was. So now I have to do more research. But at this rate, college is the least of my concerns.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, They have all the stock answers that deflect attention to the facts, don't they?
