What Is The Best Way To Determine A Good Daycare/preK For A Child With ASD?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I know I'm not the only working mother in this area. Where the heck can I find a preK that will take an ASD 5 year old, still in pull-ups, and on project lifesaver (wanders) so that I don't lose my flipping job?

I'm not in your area but had to deal with similar issue a couple of years ago with our son. My wife went to about 6 pre-K schools in the area to check them out. By far, the top priority for us was elopement (running off). This was the one safety issue we had. Honestly it became the deciding factor. School we chose was one with secured doors (obviously) but also with a completely fenced in playground area. It gave us the peace of mind that he would not run off. Worked out great. Plus they took non-potty trained.

Try your local Easter Seals office for resources. In Iowa the local schools have to take special needs children starting at the age of 3. They are put into the school system and given special needs classes.

My grandson is special needs, I think he's on the autism spectrum but my son refuses to acknowledge it. Anyways he isn't potty trained and is deaf in one ear. He is in regular school and they are helping to potty train him.

So if Easter Seals can't help you call your local school district and talk to them about your situation. Don't take NO as your first answer, research what they tell you because most schools hate taking special needs children. Make sure you have an IEP made up too.

Best of Luck, HUGS

@A MyAutismTeam Member, thanks :) I've scoured that for months, and all of the services are not in plausible driving distance from me. I was hoping that some locals would give stories such as "We tried XYC home daycare and they are fantastic" or "Daycare Z was willing to learn with us how s/he adapted to school".
