How To Handle Being A Teacher And Mom
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Looking for Advice!

I work as a teacher at the same school my son goes to. He is 2nd grade main stream, high functioning ASD. Are there any other mom/teacher (or dad/teacher) combos out there that could share how they balance the work and personal part of this while at school. I want to be there for my son but don't want to offend any of my coworkers either by being "too" involved and a "helicopter" parent.

I'm a teacher mom and actually had my kids transferred into my school after a rocky start at another school. This presented with some problems at first because I have two boys on the spectrum and I teach the LEAD program (our ASD class). My school knew we were transferring them in due to difficulties at the other school and not only did they work with me to ensure they weren't placed into my class but also have bent over backwards to make their education perfect. My oldest is twice exceptional (gifted and ASD) and my middle is CP and autism . I am by no means a helicopter mom and my co-workers understand me and my boys enough to know when to ask for help and when to handle it on their own.
