Did You See Any Changes In Your Child After Going Dairy-free And/or Gluten-free?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone changed their child's diet (dairy-free, gluten-free)? What changes did you see?

We are in the beginning process of eliminating my 2 year old daughter's diet of dairy, and just got her off of milk and onto almond milk. She normally has yogurt once a day with her supplements mixed in (DHA and probiotic) but I will change that to applesauce when I get to the store next. Our next step is to go gluten-free, but I know that will be especially challenging because she only eats "white"… read more

I also changed my sons diet....we only did the casin free diet. He was only drinking milk and eating yogurt. It was really hard but we also saw improvment in his sleep and behaviors. A few months later with theropy he did finally start talking.

Coconut milk yogurt is delicious. My daughter had been gluten/ casein free for a year. I noticed changes within the first week. Increase awareness of her environment. We see a DAN doctor that guides us through biomedical therapies. We are very happy with the progress.

@CatinaCaytor I am not trying to stop the autism. I am new to the game here but even I know that's not possible. My daughter sees a neurologist, speech therapist, is beginning OT next week, and we are waiting on a referral from her ped for a psychiatrist. We are just beginning early intervention, so we don't know if ABA therapy is even needed yet. Our early intervention program is getting us in touch with a nutritionist, I was merely asking for others to share their experiences while I wait to see the nutritionist. No harm in wanting a little hope that things *might* change in the slightest bit if we eliminate some things from her diet. Thank you for your reply, though.

It's odd that parents claim to see significant improvements in their kid due to changes in diet but the professionals don't push it beyond a normal healthy diet. My and wife both think a gluten free diet would do nothing for our daughter. Our kid is picky enough now and restricting her diet more doesn't seem like a good idea.

My sons expressive and receptive language improved in the first month. The diet?...Mental growth spurt?...Coincidence? I don't know but I can ask him questions now and he's using three to four word combinations! My family and i are amazed at his progress. I will continue just in case it is in fact the gfcf diet!
