Hello Everyone,
New member here. My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at age 4. This diagnosis was changed to ADD Inattentive Type a few years after that. It really has been a whirlwind of changed/new diagnoses for the last several years, an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. My question pertains to his public school IEP classification, which is currently "speech impaired." I didn't push for an ASD classification, since I had no difficulty obtaining the necessary services in the school… read more
What state are you in? Ask everyone in your district to get you the print copy (pdf is ok too, just a lot to print to make a point) of "Accommodations" the district is required to make available to every student with an exception, or special need.
*****Hint**** this information usually is not web searchable. You have to ask for it. The best place to collect information is "family expo's", trade shows, CARD conferences, etc. There, the district has a booth full of information and staff who are there to woo parents out of private schools. Collect all the information packets you can, and get names..
The school will generally treat your child as gen ed, if he is in Gen Ed for more than 60-70% (depending on state) no matter what label is on his IEP. If you feel your child is having difficulty on his own dealing with the social shit of school, you're best bet is to request to get your child a personal assistant or teachers aid. For at least half the day. No school in history likes that option for financial reasons, but at the same time BULLY is the new "B" word.
Guns blazing...walk quietly, carry a big stick, kill them with kindness....what ever you feel most comfortable with, try first. Do not back down!
ha,i was told "personal aide's" were no longer provided by the school system. as long as the class had enough aides/teachers the child was well provided for
Felicity, thank you for the info. We are located in NYC.
And how in the hell is it possible to have a SELF CONTAINED 12-1 CLASSROOM? 12-1??? Is that even legal?
