My Son Was Denied Life Insurance
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

my son has had life insurance from American Income Life since he was 3 months old ! We were recently re evaluated my husband upped our policy and our sons! We got a letter back 3 days ago starring they can't insure him but gave us no explanation on there letter to why! I've called our agent thee times with NO response back!

We never mentioned he had autism! They never asked. We didn't think it would be an issue cause he's had it for three years!

What do we do?????

Which company are you attempting to go through for your son's life insurance policy? Unfortunately, if they somehow got wind of his autism diagnosis, that is likely the cause of the denial. Thankfully, for us, my husband's line of work offers us a pretty great deal with regards to life insurance policies so I have yet to run into any problems.... but from what I've heard, many life insurance companies are very weary of the autism diagnosis based on the increased risk of injury or death, especially when they are younger. More specifically, the degree of autism and other mental/physical health factors are greatly weighed in as well.

A higher function child with an IQ over 70 and no other disabilities is more likely to be insured with a lower premium than a child with low function autism with or without secondary problems such as Rett Syndrom, mental retardation, and/or seizure disorders. But this type of information needs to be fully disclosed to the company in order for them to decide.

Unfortunately, a company doesn't have to tell you why they denied you, but that doesn't mean you cannot press the issue. However, there are companies out there that offer life insurance for people with autism.

Unfortunately, life insurance, as important as it is, is often a huge scam. Which is sad, because it helps in the worst of times.... The entire point of life insurance is to help with the expenses of death.... but, the closer you are to death, the more likely it is for a life insurance company to drop you, or kick your rates up so high it's nearly impossible to pay them! Which is crazy!

The main purpose of life insurance is to provide for a family if someone dies. If a parent dies, their loss of income or role in running the house leaves a hole. Kids don't make money nor do they really do a lot for a household in terms of money or help. You're better off investing your money elsewhere.

He just had his testing Evaluation this past Tuesday &goes back for part 2 of test in on the 13th the psychologist told me she saw a huge improvement since she first saw him over a year ago when she diagnoised him! He went from Moderate Autism to Very MILD AUTISM! He's had ABA and is in school from 8:30-2:30M-F! And his teachers have said his intelligence is way up there! He knows ADDITION SUBTRACTION AND MULTIPLICATIONS problems. He knows what EVERY SHAPE that exist is and how many sides to each one! He can even READ ! So I'm pretty sure he's above that 70 rage! NO seizers no other illness except SEVERELY ALLERGIC TO PINEAPPLE! And Carey's an Epipen!
